Surviving Minnesota!

Tonight Junior did his job. All the way across the lawn from the coop the Illini were ducked under brush in the woods a bit 'stuck'. Up the hill near the house stood Junior throwing out the Predator call (sounds alot like he egg song to me) He stood in the middle of the lawn very exposed. Very vocal, very visible. Everybody else was in the coop, I believe as it was getting to be dusk. Up in our half dead White Pine very near the coop was a gorgeous mature bald eagle. I was so proud of Junior. He stood out there either stupid or to put himself out as bait to distract for the Illini. DS helped me to get the Eagle moved on. I love our National Bird but I'm not a fan when it is stalking my birds.

Junior has suffered many comparisons from the food lady. As he doesn't share or treat his hens. He is fairly homely compared to his beautiful father. And until now...has been sub par watching out for predators. All that changed tonight. He's growing into a fine rooster.

Jerry and Minnie thanks.

I am not expecting anything, I just want to try it. I look at the SOP and think they look ok, but I really do not know. I am way behind on the tame bird and birds that do tricks stuff. Way behind!

I did have a SS that sat on the ledge next to me tonight and let me pet her without running away, too soon.. Of course it is so young I can not tell it's sex yet.

Oh and I carried Ed (the PC) to his new pen last night! Did I mention he bit me while I was carrying him??

My daughter made it back safely from the BWCA, so that is good. She had a good time, no fish though, but that is ok she says. I guess my brother and his wife were also up there, lol, I could have had him check on her! small world.

Ralphie, how is Judy doing?

Ivie: you'll have to get that picture posted. I'm not seeing spiders matching that description on my google image search with those characteristics typed in.

Hey Cluckies. Glad to see you back on...along with Rhetts too. Very nice... I'm Jelly of that Staycation. I've gotta say.

I've been wondering why I haven't been getting notifications for this thread... Here I accidently unsubscribed

The frizzle cochins are still at $75. I asked Jamie what the shipping is hopefully they're smaller and it's not $90. If it is less them $90 I will probably bid

Judy is doing ok, I think, she is just very weak. Thanks for your concern. Cluckies, Have you eaten one of those puffballs yet?

BC, I have some very bad news for you. As a professional Chicken Wrangler I was forced to take many classes in Chicken Psychology. A bird that stands out in the open and taunts an eagle is not being brave or protective. He is wanting to get out of his unbearable living situation. Sometimes something as simple as having an owner that is constantly comparing him to a past bird can do it. The bird feels hopeless and decides to commit suicide.

The official term for this type of suicide is " Suicide by Eagle". I hope this helps you. BTW it is not always the bird owners fault the chicken is clinically depressed. 3 percent of the time it is the fault of the hens he lives with..

I hope this helps you.

Today I am going to experiments with chickens and the Stockholm Syndrome. I am going to try and confine my potential show birds and see if I can get them to identify with their captor, me. I would hate to see them bite the judges.

I guess that means I have to decide in next days who is going to the show.
