Minnie you know how to breed these birds. She is just amazing. It's just bit of teasing about her head. She looks like an folk art painting of a chicken with a boxy body and the fine head. Her lines are just gorgeous. The cockerel has been wanting to hang out with her. I should get a good photo of the two of them. But waiting for them all to sort of fill and feather out. He's needing the big tail feathers yet and some hackles to finish off. His body size though is going crazy. He gets bigger every time I look at him.

I agree with Minnie, Holm's needs to get his buckeyes to Hutch. However, I can't help him, I am afraid. I have my own dilemmas occurring.

I have signed up the gaggle of birds to show and I have signed up to sell birds. The judging and the sales take place at the same time. I thought Judy would help me, by sitting by the trailer to sell birds. However, she has to work and just coming off sick leave she is unable to get the day off.

I thought I would get my son and granddaughter but that is a no go. I tried my SIL and other granddaughter and that failed. I have no idea what I will do now. I really wanted to be their for the judging to learn fro the judges but really wanted to sell birds or try too. I even plan to try and sell a couple of Bert's boys. Purely for someone's thanksgiving table.

There is no way I could work a trip to Holm's and back into the already tight schedule.... Holms give up the hunt!! Bring your birds down and sit and sell mine! See problem solved. Anyone free to sell birds PM me!!!



I am drinking my coffee so I can safely get on the road to Longville. I think I have everything ready to go. I just need to load the roosters for Jerry and I am off. I did make one mistake already, I forgot to get Mike or Henry to bring with me for after the hunt. Hunting Mushrooms with Mike's or Henry's could lead to misidentification and illness. Afterwards it goes well. (Only one though as it is a long drive home)....

I will try to stop by this week and look at your chicken on the tree Ivie. And your brooder. I have been so busy trying to get ready for winter and spring hatching. I have no idea if I will get it all done or not. I have not even started the new hatching room yet. Judy and the USDA vet have conspired to kick my incubators and hatchers out of the house.

I have a change of clothes with for after the hunt, as I normally get loaded with beggar lice while hunting. My Mushroom bag is covered with them, I will have to pick them off during coffee in Longville.

BTW so far the winner of the Yokohama Cockerel is Erlibrd. There has only been one official essay for the cockerel and that was by MnchickMom, but she was one word short of the required 3 words. So I had to go to the next semi-official entry which was Erlibrd.


Erlibrd used an improper entry from and got confused as to the breed of the Cockerel. Here is her entry, she submitted it on a ovation form, but I am willing to overlook that so she can have the Yokohama Cockerel:

"I love the Spitz"

Obvioiusly, my having posted pictures of the Yokohama and the Spitz both confused her. I will still take entries for the Yokohamo though in case some one wants to try and beat Erlibrd's essay.

Good Morning Chickeners . . . . . I hear the morning hunters shooting at something out there. And it looks like another beautiful autumn day is ahead. I think I need to scratch Spring and declare Autumn my favorite season of the year. Come Spring I will be confused about why Autumn was the favorite and declare Spring to be number one.

Anytime Ralphie - they are on the big Oak tree just at the back corner of the pole building. Earlier there was something on the stump in the front yard by the garden but I dunno if its still there. The brooder I made is no big deal. You 'guys' would have pounded it out in an hour. It took me about six. I will go check on those little ones shortly here to see how they survived being out in the garage.

Speaking of garage - I s-l-o-w-l-y backed into the garage door one afternoon this last week. Once in a great while it does not open all the way but enough so that it is not seen in the rear-view mirror. It was on one of my grandma duty days. I got out and forced the door to open but then it would not close. Called the DH who is, of course, busy enough without a garage door added to his list. When he returned home from whatever it was that he was doing - probably working or something along those lines - he made it come down. Good thing I cleared the animals and grandkids out and away from it because when he got it lined up and pulled on a rope to bring in down it came crashing down fast and hard. He had laughed (at least he laughed) and said it was ten years since the last incident so he supposed it was about time for this to happen. I was hoping for a new garage door to match the Rupunzel shed but no, he had this one fixed.

I'm waiting for Ralphie. Jerry has called me about timing. Ralphie called and has redesigned his bumper with a deer to blend in with us locals. He is on the road again and what he doesn't realize is that I have standards to keep up. I've packed Henry and Stella. He'll be just fine.

Ralphie... Once judging starts, you are kicked out of the aisles in the show hall anyways. They don't want spectators milling over the judging while it is happening. As for the sale section, most of us just put a card or piece of paper on our sale cages with name and phone number. Keep your cell phone handy because interested people are usually standing there waiting. Hardest part is getting all your birds in and cleaned up for show ring without being led away to sale section many times. Thus I usually wait on even bringing in sale birds at all until all my other ones are in, feet cleaned up and have food/water cups in place.

LOL I just signed on looking for an answer again. I know its crazy but the eggs were referred to 'eat before 21 days from the hatched date as they are not pasturized. how would an egg be pasturized? still on it about this

Evidently the eggs are put in a water bath that "The combination of time and temperature heats the eggs in their shells to the exact temperature needed to destroy all bacteria, exceeding established food safety standards—without cooking the egg."

Cochin area is all done except one. It needs window screen on the side.
I've got church tomorrow morning and a 4H thing in the afternoon

Looks good but I hope these cages are inside something else that is critter proof, a coon will rip through that screen as if it wasn't even there and have that latch figured out in 2 minutes flat.

Yes they are inside my current coop. I think the birds would die from hypothermia before a raccoon or skunk got in
