The DH and I traveled to Albany to p.u. our dog-in-training. HOLY CATS! We are so impressed. Plus we learned a ton of information. I have done the dog training classes with one of my ankle bitters so some of what was said I know - but need to practice. The DH has never had a dog before this and does not know a thing about training but man, is he close to and proud of this girl. As I have said, she is almost three and we got her at eleven months so I think this is a little late but better late than never. And it is fun to hear the trainer talk about your dog just like it is to hear the coach or teacher talk about your kid. She did great on obedience AND getting a bird up. She needs more training on retrieving but will get it with the training. And she is beautiful, I think. Just a small 50 pound mostly black lab. He says she has some hound in her (her face is the long, sharp nose and a small head though) and he could tell that by the way she got the scent and followed it and the way she barks sometimes. We are very happy and impressed if you can't tell.

We got back and a half hour later the truck and trailer left for Aitkin with the DH and dog. Bird hunting this weekend. Funny because it is my now-husband and my used-to-be husband, along with my son and d-i-l together for the weekend. Last year the two husbands returned to the cabin after a six-hour absence and my d-i-l said "let me get this straight. You two just spent six hours together with guns in you possession and you are both returning to the cabin smiling." Everyone gets a kick out of that. Lucky me that they get along. The x's attitude is alot different to me but then again, my current hubby and I have been married over 20 years and I was divorced 25 years ago. Time. . . .

Gonna go check on the chickens and get some stuff done.

I just came in to get rubber gloves, I was out in the pole barn. I am dusting the show birds one last time before the show. They have already been frontlined or something like it a couple weeks ago. I did one and decided I need gloves and a mask.

I picked another pullet CLB for the show, She is going back to the cull pile. She has a white primary I never noticed when I picked her. I am trying to pick light colored (non gold or light gold pullets) with a good crest and comb. Maybe I am being too fussy.


To me a white primary is a killer. She will now be in the "for sale bin" at Hutch.

After all of Ralphie's trouble with the White Sports, I might just hang onto my $75. Beside's white birds are like putting out a white flag of surrender to the eagles out here. Except they take no prisoners.

Ivie: So glad to hear of your Black Lab's success at the trainers. She seems like a doll.

Sadie did some pheasant farm hunting last weekend. She stayed close and lept and bounded up and down of the tall grass. She scared up one bird. But she has a long way to go on field hunting. They tried to get her excited about a dead pheasant and she walked away. Not sure if she thought it was a chicken or thinking that she needed to just leave that dead bird dropped. IDK. DH thinks it's my chicken training though...I know. I could tell by the way he leaned that conversation last Sunday. You know what ....I don't care!

She retrieves ducks just fine. He just needs to spend time with her...which he doesn't do.

I didn't get to reading up on the thread until now (1:30pm), so I hope you had a good trip up there! You probably do come pretty close, I am just a mile off Hwy 58. LOL It is all open and I can see to the corner even.

@duluthralphie @Minniechickmama I have some sad news. There is no possible way of us being able to make it up Friday. The earliest we could make it is Saturday morning. I just don't know how this year will work. We are for sure doing it next year as long as it's not canceled far AI or something again. We will for sure be there all day Saturday and in the morning Sunday and can help with take down if help is needed.

You can coop in up to 9am on Saturday. If that is a possibility and you are already registered, don't give up hope

Good you are pulling that one out with the white feather.

If you are putting together trios, and maybe someone already told you about this, you need two pullets that are as close as you can in type and color. So, whatever color you are trying to accentuate more, make sure they both would have that going for them to the closest extent possible, but matching type is still the top priority if you have to sacrifice anywhere, make it on color.
