At our local feed mills layer is $9.00. We got feed at LM once and it was $11.00 a bag:/

How many pounds do you get for $9? The Fleet Farm bags are #50. I like it okay, but sometimes I get a really crappy bag full of powder. I mix it with goodies for the chickens, but I'd prefer not to do it. I like the pellets, but FF sells #40 bags for $12.99. I'm not a fan of the price. I only feed it to the ducks if I can.

@MinnesotaNice I just give mine cracked corn and then start giving them a little layer around the middle of January so they can start getting ready for laying season...

I feed them feed with some whole corn on the side, then switch to just feed for the summer. You'll probably be fine with just feed though. Have you got any eggs yet?

Awesome - thanks for the info! I think I'll start mixing 1 part feed/3 parts corn. Scovies eat so dang much in the winter. Corn will help keep the cost down. They sit and beg for it anyways.

IF (AND THIS IS A BIG IF) I ever buy more ducks they will either be SQ Call ducks or SQ Rouens. Maybe even Aylesbury... Idk though... I really want some White calls...

Weren't you thinking of Sebastopol Geese at one point? I think they're pretty, but wouldn't be for me. I see some white Calls for sale on the FB farm groups once in awhile. Alison Leary (Al's Quackery) always has Call ducks for sale, but I don't know what quality they are. I'm thinking more pet.

So I got roped into this big online secret Santa thing. I get assigned a random internet stranger to send a gift. I get one from a different stranger... so on and so forth for like 200k people! I wrote in my note to secret Santa that I like chickens... should be interesting to see what comes of it

My co-worker had done it before and talked me into it. They do it a couple times a year I think. It's invite only and you can only invite one person after you have participated successfully and not shafted your giftee

Oh, and @NathanZee , no eggs yet. I expect my two KC females to be laying right now, but no such luck. I cleaned out a 10x10 dog kennel yesterday and DH put a roof on it. I have an extra dog house I'm going to toss in the there and hopefully get the kennel wrapped with plastic this week. My KC trio will go in there. I'll hopefully start getting eggs from them once they're settled in. They, not by choice, sleep with the Muscovys now. I think the stress of being penned up (They've been 100% free range until recently) and the bigger ducks hanging around freaks them out a bit. That's my guess anyways. I obviously tend to overthink it a bit.

It's an aweful wet sloppy mess out there. The chicken coop feels dank and gross. Will be changing those shavings sooner than expected.

I watched a portion of "Chicken people" and it looks like a documentary from the opening credits...I saw a little labelling indicating a CMT docu or something along that lines. Taking advantage of underlying personal issues for drama sake makes me not a fan. Why couldn't it just be objective and quit with the pathetic side stuff. Get more technical about the shows. Maybe I needed to watch the other half....But I could hardly stand the first half....so probably not going to waste more of my time on it.
Poultry as livestock has helped propel the human race. It's a very easy to manage livestock animal and the fact that people find hobby in it and not in drugs, alcohol or gambling I'm all the more a fan of it. Don't give the impression that we wear silly chicken sweaters or are obsessed to the point risking jobs. Although...I should find that chicken sweater for our Christmas Eve party. (Ugly sweater theme....)
