Surviving Minnesota!

Morning . We had turtle for supper . A rare treat for us .I only get 1 or 2 per year . UPS delivered my pallet forks yesterday . These fit on my tractor's loader bucket . A concession to age . Difficult to move cages .

Looks like our good weather has come to an end. I see we are headed below Zero in the next week.

Windy as Hades here, Kloppers.

I guess I start gathering eggs several times a day now. The good thing is with the small number I am getting there is no reason to carry a basket.

My best layers are my Toads. The world is upside down. I am going to hatch them and see what the next generation looks like. The eggs of this generation as quite different from Bertha's eggs. They are smaller and more speckled. I a hoping @MNChickMom 's daughter wants a couple for 4H meat chicken at the fair. I have no idea of the criteria. To me they are the perfect meat bird. They are not as fast growing as CX's but have way bigger bodies with more dark meat. The juice just oozes when they are carved.

Does anyone want a toad for Christmas dinner?

I am going to be processing one in about 2 weeks for our Christmas doing two is not harder than one. Nothing says holiday meal like a toad on the table.

I think I will be working in the sheds today. If I ever stop drinking coffee. I will try to work outside on the so-so days ahead. the cold days I will be working on the incubators and hatcher. Jerry, I have decided to do toe punching this year, you talked me into it, it just takes a year for a stubborn Swede to decide you are right about it being the best way to mark a bird.

Oh @KlopKlop I do not do the hatch-a-longs, I did but they just make no sense to me.

I've not done one nor even read them. What doesn't make sense? I thought people just set eggs on the same day then there was fun stuff like prizes for first to hatch and best hatch rate and such?

The eggs I get from my CX hen are super speckled. I really hope to get a toad cross this year when I hatch as well as some crosses over my Cornish hens.

My second generation rainbows were big boys as well. Conrad had good genes. I wish i would have called the flock up when you were here to see him and big buck.

Super windy today. School postponed until 10, waiting for the bus now.
I cleaned the turtle tank this morning, they are now happy.
My dads going to water the chickens today since I filled everything up last night.
I feel like we're going to get to school and then they'll tell us we can go back home

We are all off school today. Trying to clean up and make room for the Christmas tree. Shoveled out the run and banked up the snow for a wind block all round the inside run. The scattered oats, wheat, and sprouted wheat out in the run to encourage them to come outside. Thenate and went back in. I tried.

I think our school doesn't want to have 4 days to make up.
In my point of view they should make the town kids come in, and let the rural families make the choice if they want to drive in, they also have the buses out... I know that our bus driver didn't want to drive today

Great Idea but does not work. There is a minimum number of days students must be at school. If you do not have a certain percentage of the students in school the day does not count. In addition, on a practical matter, how would you move a class ahead if you have to repeat the same lesson the next day for the students that missed the day before?

You don't have to have class technically, at my old school we'd just watch movies

.
I don't remember the percentage but my old school of 31 kids had one day when my dad, the school board president, said anyone willing to come can come, hoping that enough kids would come. There were 12 of us, and it counted

I know that 2/3 of our school is town kids. The rest of us live out of town.
