Surviving Minnesota!

I have one coop I a not getting eggs out of. It makes no sense. It has lights just like all the other coops. Last week I got 2 eggs in one day from one of the nest boxes.

Why would 8 hens/pullets lay 2 eggs on one day and nothing for weeks either side of it?

I lost a few gold balls out of that coop too. I thought maybe a rat?

But I keep mouse and rat poison bars in those black boxes so the chickens can't eat them and mice and rats can. I ad new ones every couple months. as they do get eaten.

I do not feed in the coop so there is no other feed in there.

Then it dawn on me. Squirrels! So I googled do squirrels steal eggs? I have 5,000 squirrels around here. Thanks to the people from the city coming out here and releasing their nuisance squirrels in the wildlife refuge.

This is the video I found!

I am now declaring full blown war on squirrels and not this half hearted one I have had.
Wow that's not good! Did you take the video? ETA: Nvm I see you found it. I wonder if squirrels will harm chickens?

Jerry: You are tuned into your little cabin in the North. I don't know what the temp is right now. All I know is that the Poop in my coop has thawed and it smells like h-e-double hockey sticks. Usually I don't need to clean coop until February. Dang it. It is foggy and I think it's putting a nice glaze on the roads.

Omgosh! I hope you are good MNChickMom! Intact. You've had enough broken body parts around you. Uffda. Call me nostalgic or what have you but I think I like a winter that has snow. This ice business is HORRIBLE.

Are those BCM's barnyard mixes or do you have a roo setting in a pen with hens? Oooo... Me thinks me wants, too....

Ditto on the poop smell.

All are pure aside from the obvious mixes. I got the eggs from a friend. Most will be a surprise when they hatch since the only eggs I can differentiate for sure are the Silkie, BCM, EE/OE, and Leghorns. Bonus is the rest have characteristics that are different enough to set them apart from one another. The blue eggs may give away to pure Ameraucana's. That would make me happy.

Hey everyone- happy belated new year!

Do you know anyone who raises/sells Muscovy ducks? A friend is looking for some.

Hope everyone is well..

Hey Scandia, I think I replied to you in the Muscovy thread, too. What are you looking for in terms of color/pattern? Ducklings, juvies, or adults? Show or pet quality?

Ameraucanas are beautiful and nice for sure. Love their egg colors, too.

I am in for a lunch break... Slipperier than an oyster on a half shell out there. Even with MnChMom's warning I still almost went on my ample posterior. I should have checked the breeding pens for eggs, but decided to bring the ones from the barn in before I slip down the hill looking for more.

I caught a egg eater today! My Dominique rooster has taken a shine to fresh eggs. I actually saw him kick the hen off the nest as soon as the egg dropped. I thought he was just being horny. He is now in a little box by himself. And the hen that turned to eat her egg with him is in another single cage.

I will put them together once a week so I can get chicks. Their life in a big breeding pen has come to an end.

If he was the other Dominique rooster I would clip his beak, but this is the one the judges liked so well, (when he does not have spurs)

I have not gotten a PC egg in almost a week, I am wondering if I don't just have a whole flock of egg eaters! I am making a new breeding cage and nest box for the PC's. I am going to make a roll away nest so the egg rolls outside the cage.

I've got Lucy Laying a ginormous brown speckled egg for me. Her ink cartridge is in dapple mode and the egg is large and glorious from this almost 3 year old. Bless her big fluffy butt! She likes the balmy temps just like Jerry!!!!

Moved a pile of Poop-ola out of the coop. Much better in there....much much better. Happy birdies.
