Surviving Minnesota!

Could you teach Judy how to get up early even on days she does not work? (I might be dead if she ever reads this, so.,,, BYE all)

It cannot be taught

What if she woke before you and then you might wake up with a pillow on the wrong side of your head

Good morning chickeners . . . .

Mnchickmom - good to hear about your son's progress; sorry to hear about your kidney stone. I have never had one but hear that they are painful. Your Gram will probably end up loving the nursing home and the opportunity to be social and play the games. I would like to hear the stories if you get any to tell.

Erlibird: I did some cabin cleaning this past summer to help pay off husband's deductible. The resort I worked out of had the BEST owners and I worked with and partnered up with my dear friend of 30 years cleaning. We laughed the whole summer away. It was hard work but the pay is better than nurse pay around here to be honest. Crazy. Good for you snatching up that sweet little cleaning job. I'm tempted to do it again this year. But the Saturdays are a killer when I'm already working Sundays. I had a total of 3 days off this past June and July. But the cash flow was sure nice and got our family through a sticky bit.

Ralphie the mushrooms aren't growing so well around here right now.

Holy Slick back roads. Yikes. The cool down has made for some seriously slipperiness.

Jerry I want that Berry Garden so bad. I should be checking things out shouldn't I? The kids would love having a blackberry, raspberry garden maybe even put in a corner of strawberries. That would be fun.

Morning Ivie and Ed, Layers et al.

MNChickMom. Oh my gosh your Grandma sounds like a cut up. I hope I'm as feisty and independent as she is when those days come around.

Holm how's your little crossbeak doing? Or did you have to cull the poor thing?
Yes...updates please. We are tough chickeneers we understand if "he" had to be culled.

Incubator Update: I will leave the hatching to the professionals! The gentleman at Incubator Warehouse was very kind and is sending the missing parts today, but of course it is a 5 day wait with mail. So instead I think we will hatch some barnyard mutts. And buy the show birds from Ralphie.

He is still alive and I think he will make it. He/she will eventually go in the freezer though. I absolutely hate butchering pullets though so I hope its a rooster. I have to get pics of all the little babies when i clean the brooder in a little bit.

BC.. What no mushrooms? Why?

I actually have been planning to go out and try and find some Chaga but I have been so busy I have not gotten into the swamp to hunt for it.

I have a very sad story to tell about an old man and a criminal.

This old man gets up and makes his way to the kitchen every morning to drink coffee, read the news and talk to his chicken loving friends. When that is done he slowly dons his outdoor clothing grabs his cane or walker and shuffles his way out to the chicken coops. He has many, because this old man is not all that smart. It takes him almost an hour to shuffle all the way to the far coop braving the cold wind and snow. He perseveres and finally makes it to the coop.

His one joy left in life at his advanced age is gathering eggs. He had even built a specially designed nest to stop the egg thieves. For the biggest part this worked and no criminal stole one of his precious life giving eggs, until this morning.

He went to pick the two Dominique eggs he so treasured because his Dominiques were of the Urch Line of birds. Arguably some of the best birds in the state for the past 65 years. He looks into the egg trough to find this:

The old mans heart was broken. This Bonnie Parker of the poultry world had stolen his reason for living this day.
The old man went to work trying to prevent this type of crime from occurring again. Hopefully, it is now a thing of the past. He shuffled back to the house holding his walker a little tighter and with a little less joy in each step..

If you should happen to see this criminal call the authorities do not attempt to stop her yourself, she is dangerous. This is a recent picture from her last incarceration..
