I hate to say it but I think we have a cow with rabies... She is foaming at the mouth a lot and it's not cud foam. She also tries killing you when u get within forty feet of her. She also snorts at us and jumped over five strand barb wire fence that is about 4 foot tall. I am gonna video is trying to get her a mile back to the corral tomorrow. Wish me luck.



BTw she is usually really tame and you can walk up to her. This is the first time in the past four years this has happened with her.

Pretty worried for you guys right now.. rabies is not good

This is filed under "news of the weird"  The State patrol use to relay all "heads' from  potential rabid animals to the UofM where there were sliced open and checked for rabies.  The heads where packed in ice and in Styrofoam boxes.

There was a cow head that came from some where near Thief River Falls,  I think 8-10 troopers touched the box and relayed it to the U.    When it got to the U the doctors there said it was leaking and the head was rabid. They ended up having to give rabies shots to everyone that came in contact with the box. 

I think that was one of the last  heads relayed to the U, from then on it was done with couriers so only one person came in contact with the rabies. 

I am slightly worried about you guys.

Oofda Ralphie. We are going to have the vet out. If she is positive for rabies we are going to get shots. I am on a cattle forum and they all say rabies too.

She most likely got it over the summer and it was dormant till now.

Unfortunately cattle can harbor rabies for long periods of time before showing symptoms. Be very,very careful - rabies is transmitted by contact with saliva in cuts, bites or mucous membranes.. While cattle usually get the "dumb" form of rabies, which causes lethargy an the appearance of choke, they can get the "furious" form and behave aggressively.

Since it is hard to identify when shedding of the virus in saliva begins, once a positive diagnosis is made anyone with recent contact us treated.

BTW there are other neurological conditions that can cause similar signs, so diagnosis is very important.
