Surviving Minnesota!

I would love to bees around here. But we have bears that wander through raiding the retirees bird feeders. I think they'd put me out of business very quickly wrecking expensive beehive supplies and such. Mann Industries (one of the few beekeeping suppliers) has their headquarters just 20 miles to the west of me . So they'd be handy getting started up. But again that's a time constraint thing also. I could probably hotwire fence the hives. Too many irons in the fire with these kids.

Holm are you going to try the toads in the market pen?   I am so hoping they do better than the CX.    There is no division for adults that I know of in open for them.

I really liked Benton county fair, I am thinking of entering a ton there.  It is way better than Sherburne county.

Sure! The judge that is coming this year again said he likes them. Between 6-7 pounds at county fair so they are still not too big for State if they make it. How long do you think it would take them to get that big?

We will be able to tell as I have mine growing now.

I will start weighing them as they get close, I am thinking of weighing them again tomorrow. I am not sure they gained much this week with the move from the basement to the barn.

MNchickmom what all do your kids show? I am signed up for a market pen, a breeding trio, a cow calf pair and possibly a steer or breeding heifer. I am gonna take a look at the steers and heifers and see. We have a steer who is nice but toes in a little and I dont like how he holds himself sometimes but hes nice. We have a really nice heifer that I like but I worry she eont breed her first year if I show her.

I'm still not sure what i am doing!!!

Probably all of the cochins, maybe not the frizzle unless I can straighten his toes. Then a market trio with some Naked Necks. Possibly letting my younger sister fo a bantam Cochin cock I have who has nice form but had a side sprig. And then senior showmanship.
Then possibly horse, I would only do trail and maybe reining.
And then I might do the Jersey heifer calf, shes maturing really nice right now. I might let my younger sister shoe the cow if she is interested since the cow is broke well and would be a good start.

And then for "dead" exhibits I'm doing 1 dozen brown, white, and other colored eggs. Possibly some type of research project dealing with chickens or chicks. I may enter a few pictures in photography also.

Whoop, Erli. Are you using raw honey? The little bear squeezey has already had the beneficials heated out I believe. I need to pick up more raw honey. DH and the kids eat it like it's going out of style. Mostly with yogurt and fruit. It's like 8 bucks a jar. But with all the goodness that's in it ...IDK...worth it, I think.

I like making hot brandies when I'm sick. Lemon wedge squeezed, raw honey, shot of E & J, and warm water. If I drink that before bed it knocks me out for the night too. Something about the warmth and the booze. Plus I'm a cheap date.

Yes it's raw honey I wouldn't use anything else :) I've thought about my own bees but not sure yet, I'd have to do more research. A nephew of mine in wis has had bees for several years but I've never gotten honey from him.

Nope it comes premade!!

Just add ice, I prefer Ice Chips for a cold. Of course, I being a man, get much sicker than a woman does so you may have to use less of this.
Yikes! IDK about that. I've had the Ice Hole schnapps that's made in Princeton? haven't been ice fishing this year so no schnapps.

I know men get sicker DH was so bad when he caught this cold I had to sleep in another room, and after I worked all day while he laid on the couch all day he with the stuffed up sounding whine said 'what's for supper' I wanted to hit him over the head with a cast iron skillet

Chicken Dumpling Soup

1 whole fryer cut up or a Package of Thighs (more economical)-or Extra rooster.
big_smile.png

Cover rinsed chicken pieces with water (I go about 1-2 inches above the meat- 6-8 cups water I suppose) in a good sized stock pot.
Bring to a boil, skim foam and discard.

Once chicken is cooked through, pull it out and allow to cool a bit.
Add to the boiling Chicken water:
One chopped onion
3-4 ribs of celery chopped
3-4 carrots peeled and sliced
3 potatoes peeled and cubed into bite sizes

Add two chicken bullion cubes
Salt to taste (I like savory-so my tastes might be too much)
1 teaspoon of black pepper.

Start pulling chicken pieces apart into bite size bits of meat. Add to soup.
Allow to simmer until carrots and potatoes are soft and cooked through.

Dumplings:
In a side bowl add together:
2 cups of flour (all purpose)-- Important DO NOT use self-rising.
2 eggs
1 tsp of salt
blend well then
add enough milk to turn this into a thick oatmeal consistency.
Spoon into the soup with a regular small teaspoon. Hold in the chicken broth and it will slip off the spoon.
Do not stir and disrupt dumplings while they are cooking.

Dumplings will come to the top when cooked through and ready to eat.

***Most times I make a batch and 1/2 of the dumplings. Per DH's request. A double batch is too much.

@EMorical Here is the recipe you asked for.

I'm at work and do not have the card with the dumplings on it in front of me. So will double check it tonight and throw in edits by tonight if needed.
I have the chicken thighs in the fridge right now waiting for their transformation into this. Mmmmm.....

I'm thinking I need to come down to the Benton County Fair now. Some friends of ours have a Chassis business right next to the grounds. They are super busy during that time but I wouldn't bother them too much I don't think if I'm in the chicken barn.
