Surviving Minnesota!

Hawk around today I think. All the birds were scattered. 3 of the adults setting in the run preening. Junior was bellering when I pulled in way back in a neighbors pot hole. Sylvia shimmied out from under the RV. Let Sadie out for supper and a poop and it must have scared it off. The littles are doing well hanging at the coop. Man did they grow this week. The cuckoo lav cockerel likes my NH pullet and her little welsummer friend can't fight him off. Lol. It's already chicken days of our lives for the littles. They are cute as buttons. I should go down and get a pic.

Tonight the laying hens got shrimp shells. They gobbled them up. Needed extra calcium I guess. I think I'm out of oyster shell too...
Shoot.
I'm down to 2 layers. Heat of summer has hit.

Cluck-Cluck may have had a lash egg. :( she had a weird looking gelatinous discharge this morning. all I read says it is an infection and antibiotics might help, I don't have any and don't know where to get any besides the vet....
Try a Pet Store - Fish Antibiotics is Amoxicillin.
Also Ebay - Search Fish Antibiotics
I keep it on hand ..in case I need it as a last resort ..
For a chicken - 250 mg amoxicillin twice daily for 7 days
Or ask your vet - he or she could give you some ...even if they dont see chickens

Had to get that out there this morning for ole times sake. Ralphie used to be on this thread every-single-morning waiting - waiting - waiting. Remember? Then I started racing to the computer in the morning to beat him to the thread. It got to be a 'who can post first' contest and then others started to join in. It was fun for a time.
My flock was chattering away this morning which is unusual so I was up at 5:00 to check that out. It is much, much cooler out and whenever they move on their roost, which is attached between two frame posts, the metal roof creeks. I thought that, perhaps, there was a critter onto f the roof. So I went looking for my nifty folding ladder (its a 13') that I used when I climbed up on roofs to check for storm damage (it just reached - most of the time - to get me onto a roof but was light enough that I could handle setting it up and taking it down). Its missing. There is a longer story, not worth telling and let it be known that I was not happy that MY ladder was missing - again. Remember that my DH is a General Contractor. HIS DS works as a sub for the company but feels its okay for him to take MY ladder whenever he wishes. Actually, I am proposing that they keep the ladder in their equipment inventory and I hire a company to wash the windows on the house. The windows on the second story have NEVER had a good-good cleaning and I am getting too aged to lean out the second-story and wipe windows. I am afraid of dropping a window if I dissemble it for cleaning so I won't do all of that pull apart stuff.

So Holm - Big Roo huh? Sorry that you lost him.
Tell us how the testing went if you have time.
I have two BO and they aren't as big as my BA. The hens do okay in the heat. I let them free-range so they can find ways to take care of cooling off. I also provide a small pond pool and I am not suggesting that you do these things at all Holm. You already know about all this stuff. Waaaay more than I do. I am saying I was worried about my birds and am glad they weathered the heat this time. I am waiting for one to drop over from heat exhaustion.
Was Ralphie's surgery yesterday? Poor guy. I visited when Judy had hers. She could sit up for a little longer period of time when we were on the deck but had to go lay down. Surgery of any kind is NO FUN
