Surviving Minnesota!

I personally think insulating the roof is a good idea. Moisture can build up and drip on birds. Also I've noted a difference in temps and I like it a little bit warmer for them when it's -25 F . I do have to change out my insulation about every two years due to mousies. Buggers. So gross. Insulation can keep a coop cooler in the summer as well. Pros and cons.
Yea i was thinking maybe just the roof, my coop is a lean to style so i thought just one sheet and then cover w feed bags or 1/8 in plywood. if we don't have lots of snow and it gets super cold (like it always does ) i don't want to have a flock of popsicles!

Lvie, I understand your feelings, but I'm with btc, a leash and more training time working the birds sound in order. But if yoy do decide to get rid of her, don't rush, pick a good home, or give to a rescue. We don't want the poor puppy put down in a shelter for doing what puppies do, it is their nature.

Insulating is not a bad thing if done correctly. Foam is much better than the fiberglass, as it does not provide an inviting nesting material to rodents. Insulation must be covered or the chickens will destroy it. they seem to have a fetish related to pecking on foam insulation. I would suggest a plywood inner covering of it.
Ventilation of the coop to remove moisture is a must.

Ivie, I believe that you may not be completely rational as relates to the dog. If he thought it to be some sort of varmint that killing would cause praise for, them it is logical that he would make a mistake.
If the dog has not been taught some command which is a signal to cease and desist all activity and sit or lay down, then it is not reasonable to expect he would understand randomly administered excited verbiage.
The dog may need to go for other reasons, but not for the one action ?

Well, today is Tuesday and some form of sanity has returned. I cannot believe I was that irrational and it scares me! I know (after gardening allllll day yesterday and reasoning ability returning) the dog thought it was a chipmunk with all the tweeting that chicks do. He knows 'drop' 'stop' 'no' and 'leave it' however was totally into the moment in the prospect of getting that little tweeter. I am coming around. I have learned - do not let this ever happen again. Thanks Ed.

i was curious about the possibility of mouse nests. Any one JUST insulate the roof ? or is that a waste of time?

I have a tin roof on my covered run/coop and blew the insulation that turns into foam onto it as it drips if it freezes and thaws. But then I had to cover it with hardware wire so that those on a high roost could not peck at it.

MNchickMom you are one tough cookie. How are you feeling today? (2nd day is always the worst)

Ralphie I hope you are continuing to have progress. Is it the gi virus still or just recovery from the procedure? Or other complication stuff? Anyways I hope all are better.

I'm with Ed on the birds. I'm thinking a left open gate would still allow for some birds to reurn home and feathers still of other demise... idk. Have you checked with the humane society? Lol in case grandma did leave the gate open? Lol. #funnynotfunny

Good morning... Storms are rolling through here in southern MN so I'm in the house yet. Got my gardens weeded last night and lawn mowed. With this hot weather lately, the weeds have gone nuts. Getting my first ripe cherry tomatoes and my big ones are loaded with green tomatoes. My raspberries are finally winding down for a while. Flowers are looking awesome!

I have a guy coming tonight for some pet caliber bantam faverolles. Apparently mink are definitely a problem this year for a lot of people. He lives about 30 miles southwest of me and had over 50 birds killed too.

k....morning gripe time. What is with all the e-mails lately from 4-H kids looking for birds RIGHT now? Their fairs are like this week.... Shouldn't they have known that they had enough for trios of whatever when they registered their projects back in May? No no no.....
