Surviving Minnesota!

I am now the pleased owner of 4 partridge chantecler pullets and a PC rooster. They are in a crowded laundry basket.

I feel much like I did as my wife started labor with our first.... what did I get into? Am I prepared for this? Can I handler all of the poop?
Congratulations! :clap

I'm sure you'll love them. There are enough chicken experts here to answer your questions many times over.

As well documented here, we were gone for a couple of days while getting birds.

Some strawberries and blueberries started to get a little fuzzy in the fridge. Ok to trim and feed? We'll toss out the real bad ones.

I give my birds anything not too mouldy to identify. I rarely if ever have deaths from anything except predators, so I doubt it's that bad for them.

It might be a question of if they're used to it or how good their immune system is, though, so might want to not give them stuff that's too fuzzy for a bit.

Spent the time to trim off fuzz tonight. Doubt that'll be a long-term deal.

Our jersey cow had her calf this morning! A cute little bull calf. I can't wait to butcher it, I have heard Jersey×Angus steers are amazing.

The only bad thing is the cow has such short legs and low bag that the calves have trouble learning and being able to suck right away, especially this one with such long legs. So I spent most of the day milking the cow and trying to get the calf to drink on its own. Most of this was done outside in the rain.
This morning after she calved we built this box so we can put her in the stansion, and it raises her up so the calf can drink easier.

This evening we milked about a gallon and a half out just to save it for next year if something happens during calving to a range cow.
By the end of today I was covered in poop, pee, mud, hay and colostorum up to my elbows. A shower was greatly appreciated

Lavender cuckoo cockerel. Noisy and will be a good breeder for Jerry. It may be a long two months with this piece of work. Uff-da he's obnoxious.

Chicks! Fuzzy heads dipping for a midnight snack. Filling this feeder 2-3 times today. Waterer at least twice a day. I'm ever amazed at chickens' growth in a short amount of time. They were so tiny on Wednesday.

So its been awhile since I checked in, busy, busy, busy over here. Just wanted to show that even though it is through marriage Ralphie and I related we do similar things such as: I know a gal who wants to be down to 40 birds this winter and just set 27 eggs. Not sure why she did that but she does know they are mixes and likes to hatch eggs and the boys will not live a long life into the winter. LOL WHAT AM I DOING??! I will say I have been selling off some of my hens already so I am just replacing them and will have young birds laying coming spring again.

Grad school starts again on the 21st.
