Surviving Minnesota!

Morning . A little misty rain but it should clear off . Had so much rain the worms come up to keep from drowning . Lots of worm tracks in the mud . My unoffical rain gage shows about 4 inches over the past week or so . I see the the offical total for the month is 3.68 .

Good evening all, I lost a Dominique pullet overnight too. Mine was intact, I believe it was stress related becaus3 I had to kick 4 kids out of my chicken coop on saturday night. We had a hayride on saturday and some people's unattended kids went into the off limits back yard. They were chasing my chickens, when I found the kids so locked my chickens up at 7. This morning one had died.
:hugs hope you kicked the parents off the property too

All this talk about chicken showing is raising a question for me. My kiddo is in 4H and might be interested in showing one of our birds next year (cloverbuds so no need for it to be all that special of a bird). But do we need to practice with said chicken in a cage? Or will they tolerate a spontaneous cage at county fair time without prep?

Practice... A frantic chicken pacing in circles never creates a good impression with a judge.

Hi! In 4H it is required that you show a bird that is hatched after January first of that year. So you will need to buy birds early next spring for next years show season. In 4H they have 4 classes for chickens. They have a market pen which consists of either 2 Cockerel or 2 pullets, a breeding pen which consists of a cockerel and 2 pullets or a laying pen which consists of 2 pullets. The CX will always do best in the market and Sexlinks in the laying pens. In breeding pens its hard to tell which birds will win. Usually the show quality birds will win but I have found that that is not always true...

Visit with your club leader or the poultry person that is in charge of putting together the whole poultry project at your show.

On the cages. The first year I was showing poultry I never ever caged them. But I regretted it because as tame and docile as my birds were they did not like the cages all that much the first night. After that they seemed fine but the first day was a lot of unnecessary stress for them as they tried getting out of the cages..

Well Holms, you would not issue a written report of your trip to Ralphie's. The real reason is evidenced in these photos, and it appears the trip was very worthwhile. That appears to be an outstanding representative of the breed.
I have been busy! I had a family get together for my little brothers birthday yesterday and and I also had one for a cousin on Saturday. And then last evening I power cleaned my cage room. We scrubbed the window and everything. All of Ralphies bird are great representations of the breed! He has some amazing Doms!
