The photos of the mink have reminded me of my own recent encounter with a varmint.
If I have birds which do not return from a race by dark I have and area (aviary) which they can enter on arrival to get out of the open and be protected from predation. It usually works. The opening for entry is approximately 5" high and 4" wide.
The morning after my last two races a bird had come in after dark. However sometime during the night a Great Horned Owl crawled in and killed the bird. Even with heavy leather gloves it was able to inflict damage to me with it's talons. I released the Owl without inflicting bodily harm on it. Up close they seem to be a very large bird, and they are not too fond of humans.
