Surviving Minnesota!

I had the opportunity to witness the intelligence of turkeys today.

I was working in my shed getting my truck ready for the trip to Hutch with a ton of birds. I saw the group of turkeys walking from the bard area towards their coop. They were chucking and jiving the whole way. Turkey laughter and chatter. It was weird, they were acting like they just got their city cousin to pee on the electric fence.

I decided I should go see what they had gotten into. I walked towards the barn and I see a Tom up against the electric netting. I thought my fencer had stopped working.

Then I heard him making a "chirp" and he would shake or jerk like he was going into a seizure. As I got closer so I could hear the fencer firing, I noticed his chirps and jerks were synchronized with the fencer firing.

When I realized he was being shocked every 1/2 second I unplugged the fencer and ran (ok. walked briskly) over to him. He had not moved from the netting, even after the fencer was turned off.

I saw his head was dark black colored, not a normal color for my turkeys. I went to pull him off the fence and he was stuck to it. One strand of netting was in his mouth wrapped around his lower beak. I unwrapped him and threw him back inside his fence.

This was one of my two Thanksgiving day turkeys. He had one wing clipped to stay inside the fence. HOWEVER, I have since learned a turkey can clear a 42 inch fence in a single bound.

He appears to have jumped out to join the rest of the turkeys and then decided to pick a fight with his roommate on the other side of the fence. As we all know the surest way to get two toms to fight is put a fence between them...

Anyways, BC, Was the turkey in the fence stupid? Was the rest of them smart for acting weird so I would go save their buddy?

Or was it simply gang activity and they were laughing about it?

Turkeys are hard to understand at times...
oh my, poor guy, is he going to be ok??

Morning . Nice afternoon yesterday . Got some work done . Got to change the fuel filter on the truck today . It quit on me yesterday . I was hauling tree tops into the woods after cutting a couple of dead trees near chicken coop . Steep hill into woods . I think that stirred up enough gunk in the fuel tank to clog the filter . It was over due for a change most likely .
that stinks, i just had to deal with that on my diesel tractor

This could be Ralphie at Hutch when he looses to one of his own birds . :lau
:lau :lau

Dad picked out a nice apple wine to send along, it's a white, September of 2016 vintage.
yummy!!

Good Morning Chickeners . . . .
Safe travels to Bantambird. Safe travels to each of you going to Hutch. Especially in the incoming weather. Is Bantambird traveling in on the front of that weather? ILLS - when do you travel again?
Gonna pay the subs for the business today and get out with the push mower and get leaves up off the lawn and get the insulation in the small coops to block out the wind.
That will probably max me out. Still go the cold going on and it wears me out.
This afternoon it gets cold out so I'd better get a move on it. Gud Day Chickeners.
