Surviving Minnesota!

I am not using lights on any birds other than the show birds.

I actually have that silvery air bubble pop wrap stuff over the entire door area of the coop, it is fairly dark in there when the mandoor is open. Real dark when closed. I am finding the birds eat less and are not as impatient to go free roaming when the coop is dark. This is a old EJB trick....

Maybe when I take the bubble wrap off in the spring they will be so energized I will get 100 eggs a day from 50 hens..Who knows!

I am debating doing in the turkeys tomorrow when it is around 45...if it is,, instead of waiting until Sunday, When it will be cold again. Not sure....

Other than that back outside to work again on this great day!

Good morning poultry enthusiasts ! I do have to say that I prefer the weather thus far today over the last couple of days. I do not like the wet conditions with fog and drizzle mixed with rain. Even though colder today it is a dry cold.
Hope nothing in the Mn. Banana Belt gets frost bitten.

I concur on the freezing of the mud. I actually got some mud and dirt off my white car yesterday and took it to a carwash as we had a funeral to putt putt to --DH and I. Didn't want to look like complete derelicts in a dirty car going to church.
I went to get into the car this morning to take kids to the bus stop and the window was so clean I though I had left it open (not good when there are mice in the garage) and I went to stick my hand through the window and there was glass! :gig:D

I should also get on an eye appointment too I guess. Dentist is first though.

Still Eggless in the Boonies...

Sigh. I shall wait until I get my Christmas eggs, I suppose. No matter the ages of the hens I've had they have Christmas gifted each year. Cuties. Letting them rest their ovaries a bit here. My Wellie girl is going through her paces with her molt. I've given her some venison heart on a special secret platter away from the others....and I think it put a bit more zip in her step. She might be due for another power protein treat.

My chickens are starting to love me!

I got 14 eggs today..

One blue egg from the grow out pen.. Most likely a legbar
One Turkey egg from the layer coop...
1 white legbar breeder eggs
2 cream legbar breeder eggs
4 SS eggs! Hopefully Cuddles is doing his job.
4 Dom Pullet eggs (all breeders)
1 Toad egg.

Of the eggs 12 came from inside the barn with lights,, BUT this is a good thing for hatching in a couple weeks....
It was warm enough last night the water did not freeze in the barn.. I am happy.

Not a good pic but I thought I should post a pic or two of this beauty! I haven't brought them out for pics yet as they aren't tame at all so coop pics will have to do. Pictures don't do these Sumatras justice! This is our main breeding Cockerel for this spring. We also have a blue Cockerel and black hens.

I got a lot done this evening. I got all my Buff Orps set up in breeding pens and got new waterers set up with them and the Cochins. We also AIed the Cochins and Cornish. I clipped the Cornish Bantams beaks and toes as they needed it really bad. I also got the cage room cleaned up and set a waterer up on the floor and moved all my Buckeye and mitt growouts in there to clean up spilt feed.
