Surviving Minnesota!

Well I went in the coop to further test my rooster powers. And I think we caught Mr Rooster's developing bad behavior at the right time. I toppled him over twice yesterday, barely a push with my nearly slipper like Steger mukluks. This morning he retreated very quickly as I stepped into the coop. Of course the hens want to overpower me and charge the door (you know, so they can hide in a bush 5 feet from the coop all day).

Great. :clap

It is amazing how fast they can leave the coop..just to go hide somewhere else for the day..

Mine run out and a few go to the wild bird feeders to get the "droppings" the rest either go to the lilacs,,30 feet from their coop or to the woodshed 100 feet from their coop..
It depends on which cliche they belong too..

In my chicken flock the old birds vanish into the woods, the young ones sit in a clump of trees by the new coop, and the dumb AMs sit right in front of the dog run. If they aren't all taken by hawks before next summer I'll be amazed.

I've noted my older hens foraging better than the youngin's too, here this summer.

They all plopped on the North side of the house hoovering feed under the Hydrangea. Bums. But perhaps they were just timing themselves to be there for when I left and got home too...as the hydrangea bush is right by the garage door where scratch comes out of...They do like to venture into the woods behind their coop...that I will say I give a call and call and call and eventually here they come in a string through the woods. As fall comes they do venture further for food. Frogs and bugs are hard to come by right now. LOL.
One thing I will say I think we had more hawks around here this summer. Harrassing and such. It could be that those young ones were dealing with more than I realize.

Well folks 40's are in the forcast. It's hard on making ice for the fishermen. (no good for this town's economy) but as a chickeneer I will take it.

When I was doing chores this mornig I saw wet marks by the water tank. So I went over to see, and there is a Leghorn pullet floating in it. She must have fallen in only a few minutes prior. So I grabbed her out and put her in a cage with a lamp on her. Dad hasn't texted me saying she died so I am assuming she is still alive
