Erli, as Jerry stated the damage could have been related to sun scald ? I had anticipated the tree was larger and more established. As he also stated if there is viable tissue remaining above the graft it will likely grow back as the stated variety. If it is cut back to the graft it will likely grow from the rootstock and you will have a crab apple of some sort which would be ornamental and produce food for wildlife.
Personally I would remove it roots and all and replace with a new tree.
When planting apple trees in your climate protection from freeze and thaw of the bark is a significant concern. Tree wrap is good and for those of us that don't wish to mess with that each fall locating the tree so it is not subject to winter sun is an option. A North slope or North side of evergreens .

Thank you. I may just leave that trunk there to do what it will and plant a new tree further over where it will get some protection from the evergreens.

Well back from the Dr . So I get my injections Wednesday afternoon . Stem-cell and PRP . Backside of knee has very little gap . Front is fine .
