A word for the wise: letting your pet polar bear cub be a lapper is a really stupid idea. Unless you like them growing up and teaching you the hard way what temperature polar bear butts are.

These are not a good choice for winter waterers IMHO they freeze too easy... and then you have to thaw them out... I prefer the rubber tubs...

Thats why I want to fully insualte the coop so that it stays above freezing, it is just for the cochins since the layers will have there own coop next wintetr. Dad wants to use it as a brooder when I leave anyways so he is for insulating it all the way. I know people who use them up north and they work and don't shatter

After college I plan to move out to my grandparents, and uncles. They live about 70 miles from here.

I agree with Holms this is what I use. I heat the water in the bucket, but the valve freezes. Now I just carry water out a couple of times. Work slick for summer though.

Warm water freezes faster than cold water... So I give all cold water...

yes, those will freeze. If you have electricity, get horizontal nipples and use a bird bath deicer inside of it. This is the only waterer that has not frozen up on me.

I have thought about nipples. But putting nipples in a conditioning cage would be a pain IMO. I know people who also live in cold climates who use the cups so I am willing to buy 10 or so and try them. Most just have a well insulated building, and the water circulates back into a heated area and then goes back through the system from there
