Surviving Minnesota!

I think we need to discuss “chickens” before we pm.

It seems price is the main issue. The chickens or eggs are not going to be cheaper or much cheaper than buying hatchery birds.

All birds are not equal. Some of us pay fairly hefty prices ( in chicken terms) for our birds. We care for them, we feed them, we treat them with better conditions than the hatchery stock. They are more costly to keep than a thousand or more in confinement.

We search out better birds to improve ours, or in the case of Jerry to make a new variety or breed.

We spend tons of money showing our birds, which entails washing, grooming, giving them individual lodging. Then traveling 100s of miles to show them. Which means 2-3 days or more in a motel, all of which costs money.

Now we do trade and give birds between ourselves. We help each other with chicken tasks, processing them, vaccinating them, testing them and so forth. Many work with 4H kids or are 4H kids to preserve a rural lifestyle in an world becoming urban way too fast.

Many of us know each other personally in real life.

We do none chicken things together, we are friends. I might be touchy today, but I read your post as being a tad rude, for lack of a better word..Hopefully I just read it wrong. I have “given” away too many birds or eggs to strangers only to have to compete against my own birds the next fall..

If you want to join us as friends or would be super one can never have too many friends. If you think coming here and asking for eggs or chicks is just a cheaper way to get birds, I am not interested in selling them to you. If you want all the rest I will gladly sell them to you, and see you at our next gathering for whatever it is..

So if costs is your only concern I suggest you try a hatchery.

Thanks..

If this is out of line I will pull it down.. must be old age hitting me..
Not out of line. Bugs me when a person doesn’t want to spend much on good birds. If one wants good birds they have to be willing to give a little for them:old

And I do agree that sticking around awhile and getting to know people is great as well. Some of my best friends came from here.

Icy roads this morning. I think this was the schools thoughts on not delaying 90 minutes. The sun is out now, but the wind is still blowing

I am heading your guys way this weekend, I have a D1 volleyball recruiting thing/camp Saturday, and a High Jump camp again on Sunday.

I can't remember if I posted it on here but I lost my white cockerel a couple months back, I think the humidity and heat in Knoxville got to him, he just started going downhill after we got home. I am slightly tempted to get another variety though, I am not sure if I should though. I really like the Buffs.
The two chicks that I moved out last weekend are doing good they seem to enjoy the space. The lone chick has doubled in weight in the last week. I have 36 eggs in the incubatore right now I think they hatch in about 10 days.

What color Orpington?
Thanks for the reply! I'm okay with any color as I'm mainly interested in docile birds that are good layers. (Trying to find ways to better support household without bugging the neighbors too much. :) Eventually want to get some of my ABE students going with chickens as well!) However, if I were to list my color preference, it'd look like this: 1) black 2) blue 3) buff 4) white. :)

That is a noble goal.

I have yet to raise a dozen eggs for less than walmart sells them. But I at least know where my eggs come from...

What is ABE?

It is super you want to get kids involved in chickens, I think all kids should know where food comes from...

From our county Sheriff's Department:
"Travel advisory to reduce speed and use caution when traveling. Ice and slush have accumulated on the roadways making it difficult to maintain control of your vehicle. The sheriff's office has responded to vehicles stuck in the roadway, a vehicle and semi off road, a motor vehicle accident, and trees that have fallen into the roadway. If you need to travel use caution and reduce speed."
