Morning . Sunny now rain coming this afternoon . Rain quit about noon yesterday . So we went fishing . We caught a nice mess of sunfish . Nice afternoon . Usually I travel to fish this weekend . Still have fish in the freezer so no travel . Just local for fun .

Happy Memorial Day all. One of my 4 pullets is a cockerel. The little Wellie came up and stood his ground as I threw an earthworm to them while cleaning out flower beds. and the other three scattered. Plus his comb is blushing.
The little l&m girls voice is ringing in my ears “well they’re all pullets.”

Yeah yeah yeah.

One of the Marans looks to have wattles dropping a bit but not Rosen. We’ll see... meanwhile you folks decide if you see a Welsummer cockerel in your future. Lol.

The lawn is mowed! First time! It’s usually memorial weekend for us. The leaves were still in our yard. They usually circle and whip out into the woods with the fall winds. But last fall our first snow fall fell during peak week and all the leaves were on the trees. Weighted down I suppose they stayed where the fell. More work. Not too bad though. It’s a green lawn. Not dabbled with gray brown any more.

My Annabelle hydangeas got girdled bad by rabbits this winter. . Very large clusters of dead stems. I see new coming up. But I don’t think they will be like previous years this year. Ugh. Hard to see. Transplanted a couple hostas down to the coop landscaping.

Sorry to hear about the cockerel . Most hatcheries claim 90% accuracy on sexing . Some are hard to sex but I think a good sexer can beat 90% . That said cockerels are a loss for them so $ says 10% cockerel is a probability . Free chicks also likely cockerels . All about $ .

I got a mis-sexed Welsummer Chick this year too. And ALL of my Marans chicks are cockerels. No dark eggs for me.

Now that state track is over I was able to go ride last night. Everything is so wet here which is awesome, so the dry creekbeds have water in them and then there is one area that isn't just mud, I have no idea what it actually is but it is very muddy and sticky. Where the cows are at right now is cut in half by those two things so I had to cross them which I don't mind with the horse I took last night, the latter area I mentioned is by far my least favorite by time you get to the end the horse has sunk a good 6 inches into it. Calves are getting back and the grass is growing so there is nothing more one could ask for.
I cleaned conditioning cages yesterday, county fair is in one month, I have already accepted defeat to my younger sisters Partridge Wyandotte Cock. My oldest cock looks awful, the younger one looks decent, and I put one hen up in a cage she lost some feathers on her head due to an incident with a layer cock...
I only hatched out 4 cochin this year, I was planning on doing some more but I decided to stop. I am a senior this fall and I know I don't want my sister to take care of them if she has no interest in them. So I figured I would keep the flock small so that if I do sell them after state fair next year there won't be so many to get rid of. Out of the 4 chicks I did hatch out I have 3 cockerels, so it looks like I am for sure getting rid of 2, and I know which two will be going.

I know! Warm and sunny here yesterday, too. I even got some color while we were out putting up fence. Today it’s 50, raining and windy.
