Surviving Minnesota!

Ughhh fair week is less than a week away. Between my kids 4h birds, the birds we have leased and my open class birds we should have our hands full!

This year we are mentoring a new 4h family with poultry. So my son calls the mom and says we need to arrange a time for me to come over and help wash your daughters chickens, we will file their toe nails etc. The mom (city girl) says, "I’ll put you in touch with her dad." Dad gets on the line, "so what supplies can I take from my wife's spa kit." I will report back on Sunday if he is alive yet. :)

Meanwhile, their daughter is having a blast with her project. Unfortunately, she has an egg eater......

Morning all...

I thought I would share my excitement with all of you!!!

The Sasquatch family I share the cabin with are so excited. While perusing the Governor’s budget, I found this:

The town of Togo is maybe 5 old houses and a falling down barn...it is an unincorporated area wholly within Carpenter township..

I am so happy to know the Sasquatch’s will not have to use the outhouse anymore!!!

This excites me almost as much as learning we are going to spend 21 million to “repurpose” the Monorail at the state zoo into a treetop walking trail.. I guess the monorail is too 2000.

I was asked go put together a list for possible state fair 2020 poultry judges. Up to my knowledge they don't need to be a liscensed judge. So if any of you know of any good judges from MN let me know!

When it comes to bulls look for nuts guts and butts. Does she have any pictures of them for you?
Thanks, Holm. I only just now got this because the roofers finally showed up (suddenly) and we lost our (satellite) internet. DH just got it back up and receiving but the roof still isn’t finished. They ran out of shingles. (??!!??!!) Really? So... we’ll no doubt lose it again.

Anyway the bull is three years old, not aggressive so far. The girls had just gone through estrus the week before, so no action for him yet. He’s eating apple treats from my hand and I moved them to a new paddock yesterday with no problems. He hasn’t been here long enough for me to be in the paddock with them yet. I’m not sure what the “nuts, guts and butts” are even supposed to look like—hopefully I didn’t mess up too bad on that. I wish I’d had you with me for advice. I picked the one that looked most “right” to me, conformation-wise but I wasn’t relying on anything but instinct.

I do have the lady’s much-loved pet heifer so there’s that. :love She wants her girl well cared for. I just want them to calve safely and give me some meat and maybe milk... we don’t have enough land to go into breeding or anything like that. He’s the one on the right in both photos. I’ll try to remember to get some photos when they’ve eaten the grass down to where you can see the bottom half of the bull. I’d be interested in your opinion, good or bad.

I bet he gets the job done..

Please be careful around him. Growing up we were never allowed to be friendly to the bulls. Too many farmers were hurt or killed by them. They can turn on you in an instant.

The friendlier ones were the most dangerous. If you want to spent time with your girls you might want to consider a paddock (see I know the big fancy word for a pen) to lock him up in while your in the pasture..
