Eh, it has a lot of things going for it compared to the desert. If nothing else, dying from cold exposure is supposed to be more peaceful than heat stroke. But there's also water, reasonably priced land, grass, trees, water, a less hectic pace of life, water, better schools, just to name a few. Did I mention water? Sure. Winters will be unlike anything I'm used to, but I spent 2 weeks in MSP in winter and experienced a good blizzard during that trip, so I've had a taste.

I've spent my whole life on the desert. The sun does strange things to your brain when you bake it for that long, so to me this seems like a new challenge but nothing I'm afraid of. That could be beacuse I'm not right in the head though. Yeah, we'd be giving up some things we're used to here, but life's about learning new things and occasionally to grow you have to move outside your comfort zone.

It's all fun and games until you have to go out a the buttcrack of dawn because the animals water is frozen. Day after day.

Besides that I hear tell the application process for new southies wanting to cross over the Ralphie border line is REALLY long and unreasonably expensive.

Yes, this is why you are thinking about moving to a frozen place.
It's not cheap to live here and it costs a lot to keep warm.

Eh, costs a lot to keep cool in az 9 mos of the year too. That's a wash really.

OK, so doing research. How far back in this thread is a good place to get a feel for 4 seasons in MN for a desert rat who's not afraid of cold but has really only experienced subzero to the -teens a few times? Considering a relocation to much colder climes and ~ an hour or less from Buffalo, MN (family there making a lot of sensible noises about getting out of the droughtlands while we can).

Having spent most of my life on the other end of the heat spectrum, I know that no matter how much we prep for winter, we'll get it wrong the first time if we decide to do this. Pretty sure Tevas are not appropriate winter wear in MN

Point me to a good spot, grab some popcorn, and feel free to point and laugh as I wade through this thread and scribble notes furiously.
