Swedish Flower Hen Thread

We are new to SFH. Here are a couple of pix of our new crew. We have had them about a week now. They haven't gotten on the perch at all themselves. I finally put them up there today and they were a little reluctant to hop down. Is this typical behavior for them? As I understand it the roo has a crest that is a little too big. Other than that, any input on how they look? Would love some input. Thanks!

Quote: I think each TSC carries their own variety, but they are all coming from a hatchery, most likely. Was it Meyer Hatchery that had those awful excuses pictured for SFH available this year? I would be sure to ask where TSC is getting them and then verify with the breeder as to the quality. If you can't do that, I would pass. Just my $0.02.

Hello, my name is Laurissa. I have recently discovered Swedish Flower Hens. Which I'm pretty excited about. But I could really use some help.. me and my friend ordered 15 chicks, all different. And I believe this should be the SFH, but I'm having a hard time finding a picture online that looks like her. So I was wondering if you could help? Is THIS a SWEDISH FLOWER HEN??

Hello Laurissa...

This has become sort of the six million dollar question with these SFH chicks. We have been referring to them as "racing stripe" chicks.. They have started popping up here and there, and some breeders feel that this is not something that is a true trait of the SFH. I had one in a hatch from a reputable breeder, and the little chick grew up to be a black based mille fluer. I recently ordered the chicks from Greenfire Farms latest import of Swedish Flower Hen, and 3 showed up in my order. I will admit that I am watching them grow out, and will of course make a decision on whether or not I will be keeping them. We have located some pictures of this pattern with chicks from some gene bank breeders in Sweden. The jury certainly is still out, but I suppose being a landrace breed, influence can come from anywhere. I have decided not to keep the first cockerel that hatched last year, as he had minimal flowering, and his conformation is not to my liking. I will see how the current three continue to grow. Here is a picture of my three chicks from GFF. Your chick is very dark, and his feather patterning is wild type. I would wait to see how it grows, and of course how it flowers out. Please keep us all posted here with pictures as it grows out. There are lots of experienced breeders here, ( far more than I) that can give you information as it grows out. Of course it's not just flowering that makes a SFH desirable. You will be able to see if his he conforms to body type as well.

Good Luck!

Laurissa...

I just re read your post.... you said you ordered 15 assorted breeds? I did'nt read correctly first. What other breeds are in your order? May I ask where you got them from? If you post pictures of the other chicks. I am sure we can all figure it out.

Out of the 15 3 have died.. 2 when we got them an 1 the next day. There was 5 easter egger one I think was dead when we got them, and 1 cream legbar those went to my friend, we ordered together from Meyer Hatchery. Then I ordered 1 Dominique, 1 speckled sussex (I believe she is the one that died the next day) 1 Blue Splash Marans roo, 2 golden buffs (or gold star, or Red comets) 2 Partridge Rocks (i think one died before arriving) 1 Swedish Flower Hen and 1 meal maker meyer hatchery will donate so you can give it to someone in need.. It was kinds red, I believe it was a Rhode island red.. She was all one color, a soft red, no markings, but I already have her away.

Here's what I have here

This had to be the 2 golden buffs

This had to be the Dominique (the only black one in the batch)

I think this is the Partridge Rock

And the blue splash Marans roo, I know which one he is for sure.

I Don't have pictures of my friends EE's or her cream legbar. I'm sure the legbar she has had to be the legbar, because it couldn't of been any others
