Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Hello, i have 4 swedish flowers at 5 weeks, just wondering if im able to determine sex yet? I thought all were pullets but not sure now...TIA

#1 - thistle (pullet?)

#2 (snow)

#3 (very left, roo?)

#4

At five weeks you should be getting close to knowing the sex, but yours are perfect examples of how tricky they can be. I think Snow is a boy, but I don't see pink wattles yet, but his comb and coloring look boyish. The one you think might be a boy, #3, might be a girl. Does she have any brown on her at all? #1, girl. Not sure on #4 because I can't see comb or wattles very well. A boy usually gets white on shoulders early and have mahogany on the wing areas. Another week might make a big difference. Please post again in a week or more.

I let my two swedish flower chicks (Fay and Fifi) outside for the first time. I let them explore in the greenhouse for about a half hour. They are 3 weeks old now.

such cuties! looks like yours are getting similar feathering to two of ours, we have a black and white one as well as a mostly brown with spritz of other tones.

pretty birds!

Thank you, it's been fun guessing but I wanted to see how accurate I may be being and what to look for. I am more used to Marans, and the way the feathering comes in is usually the best indicator for sexing early I have found, but the swedish flowers are throwing me in a loop - they all feathered out the same pretty much!

#3 does have some brown / coppering. Just on the top of the head and the back of the neck area, the neck feathers are coming in slower than all the others. Not sure if that matters or not. S/he has a bit of spritzing of coppering on some wing feathers but it's barely noticeable unless in the light.

I will post some more photos in a week or two, and i'll be sure to include the comb and wattle areas.

Thank you once again.

My girl , TRIGGER. She gallops like a horse instead of running like most chickens.
No eggs yet at 29 weeks. She has red comb, red waddle and a hand length between vent bones. If she is laying, she is hiding them from me.
But I don't mind waiting for her.

I have a question for anyone that might know.
I have found 4 soft, no shell, eggs in the coop and run. I don't know who is responsible for these.
Do they normally lay several soft eggs before the normal eggs show up?
Could one bird be laying all these soft egg or do they lay one soft egg and then start with the normal eggs.
I am reading that this a first layer egg, but, I am not seeing regular eggs with shells after several weeks of this.

what are you feeding these birds? A few soft shell or no shell eggs is normal but if you're consistently getting them it is not normal.
