Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Contratphoto, how long have your hens been laying? Looks like the ones pictured on the left are larger, which I'm assuming are from birds who have been laying a little longer. Those on the left appear to be "Large" eggs..are they?
They have been laying eggs for a few months now. I had to go look at the eggs again. I think they are all about the same size. I think it was just my camera angle that made them look larger.

Just curiuos, do you run your ducks in with your chickens? I have some 6-week-old runner ducks that I am trying to figure out where I am going to put. Do they share the coop with the chickens?
They have seperate coops, but they run the yard (and runs) together. I have done this for years with a number of breeds (both in the chickens and the ducks) and never had a problem until these Maran boys.

The best advice... LOTS of waterers for that group. The ducks will nasty them all up, so one or two elevated for the chickens is great. I use pans alot with the ducks, and the chickens and goats drink out of them too.

It's not advised to coops the ducks with the chickens. Ducks are seriously much more dirty, but at the same time hate to be dirty themselves. They will soak feed, knock over things, mud up the place.... just best to give the ducks a overnight house of their own. ;)

Hello tnchicknut! Haven't heard from you in a while! Good to see you on here. You got a pair from me. Sorry to hear he is getting aggressive. I have another roo you can have if you decide you want to send him to freezer camp. Just so you know the ones that came from me won't be a year old until late Sept. They where my birthday present last year.

I have found that my SFH Roo's to be pretty tolerable of each other. I have two in a large pen together right now. One is in charge and the other stays away. He is very protective of all the gals. He did go after my four year old daughter when she pick up a 12 week old chick, but so far I have two roos that haven't go after me.

Hey!
I forgot how old they were... I was going on spur size and guessing...... I'm still not ruling out that my chicken helper pushed him back with their foot. He seems to be more angery at the shoe than me in general.

I don't know if I will have to take you up on the other roo offer or not... I hatched out 4 of their eggs and looks like one boy and three girls... one being crested.

Keep me in mind on that rooster though... because aggression is inherited and it is something we can all work together to breed out.

I don't have anyway to weigh them. They are med-large I would say. A little smaller than my Marans and Orpingtons. Is there a certain scale I should buy?

I bought an inexpensive kitchen type scale with a nice big bowl that will weigh in grams or ounces on Amazon. I understand that pullet eggs weighing less than 50 grams can be harder to hatch and the chicks not so strong. I did find that to be true in my last hatch when I weighed the eggs. I just weighed my last couple days of SFH eggs and they are all about 50 to 54 grams. I think that's about a medium egg. They have definitely gotten larger since they started laying about 3 months ago. An Ameraucana egg and a couple Wellie eggs from yesterday weigh 65 grams. They have been laying a little longer.

Sorry these pictures aren't very good, but she doesn't even look like a swedish flowers pattern either. I'm thinking she is probably a mix

Shots from my juvie coop. Little blondie SFH, left, more mille fleur patterned one on right, crest coming up...

They all have combs..the Icelandics, the Swedes, the Cream Legbar! (And I know the Legbar is a definetely a girl, thanks to auto-sexing!) Any way of telling? Should boys have wattles yet? I am used to Marans, who "wattle up" quickly!!

Is this an Icelandic or SFH? I have two that look like this!

How old are they? I'd guess the one with the crest is male. The comb is bigger already. The white/splash is too far away to guess.
