Swedish Flower Hen Thread

WOOHOO! any other roos nearby besides gunnar? 8) if not, send it along and i'll see what it's hiding. 8)

The egg was fertile (yeah - we ate it) but there was a good chance it was Mills who did the deed. I just separated them this morning and in about 3 weeks time, I'll start saving all her eggs for hatching. You'll have to decide if you want to start a SFH pen someday... 'cause you know you get first pick on anything you hatch.

Exciting! Remind me...how old is she?

I got her at a ginormous swap meet in VA - I estimate her age at 24 - 25 weeks because when I got her she seemed to be right about the same age as my other chicks.

Got my first egg from my ginger colored Swede...10 months! Yikers. But full sized, beautiful cream egg! Yippee!

How FUNNY!! The girl I have who just layed her first egg yesterday is named "Ginger!"

I ordered some Cream Legbars from Greenfire Farms to be shipped this spring and added in 4 Swedish Flower chicks to hopefully increase the likelihood everybody makes it through the stress of shipping. Looking at all of the cute pictures here helped convince me. My husband likes colorful chickens so maybe this will make him more likely to pitch in with the chores ;-) I kid. My daughter will be two this spring and it sounds like the Swedish Flower hens are calm enough birds that they should get along well.

Here's a more recent one...

The little roo is so sweet... he let's a small serama cuddle up next to him to keep warm.

What happened to the ones you hatched out from me last summer?

That first roo is gorgeous

Let's just say DH was still very much in the learning process of hatching..... only 1 made it out of the shell and he lived about a week.
Seems like last summer it was not a great time to raise anything.... chicks were dropping like flies.

Aww.. so sorry.

I wonder.. Do Swedish Flower Hen eggs just not ship well? I've had several dozen shipped recently and had a similar experience. If it were happening with all of the breeds that I'm hatching eggs from I would question my incubator/temps/humidity, but it isn't. Mostly just seems to be an issue with the SFH. Has anyone else found this to be the case?
