Well bad news from our neck of the woods! I'm pretty sure a stray dog ran off with Runt yesterday.

She was my only SFH that was almost old enough to start laying. I was waiting for her first egg. I think the dog might actually live in the trailer park about 1/2 mile from here. We've seen them on our property before. There's 2 of them. Makes me so mad!!!! If they come around while my hubby is home, they might not make it back home. In the past they've also chased my son while he was riding his 4 wheeler. Those dogs have a reward on their head on our property.

So sorry for your loss! If I saw the dog, I'd shoot it. No - it wouldn't be going home!

Look into electric poultry netting. It will keep dogs and most other critters out!

Dang! Thats awful! She was beautiful. So sorry for the loss. I have to keep mine up all of the time now because of all of the abandoned dogs around here. Animal control told me they pick up dogs that have been dumped almost everyday on my road. We used to be in the country but it has slowly developed around us. We would love to move further out, but with the market like it is it looks like we are stuck here for now.

yeah. Not happy at all about the situation. We've got our site picked out where our new house is going to go, just waiting on the floor plans to get finalized, then we're gonna start building. Now we have to move the chickens. We're gonna make their run LOTS bigger, that way I don't feel so bad when I have to keep them cooped up. I will let them out if we're out there working, but apparently need to start putting them up when we go in to take a break. I was just leaving them out during the day since we have so many roosters, they're always fighting when they're cooped up. That will change this weekend. Have 5 roosters that are going away this weekend, that'll help clear out the coop.

I haven't been able to hatch but 3 SFH, and I have tried several times. In fact, shipped eggs don't work for me. Local eggs, though, do great for me (or did...I am having a little trouble right now because of the heater coming on and off twice a day in the house. We will see if any of what I started a couple weeks ago hatch). I think there may be issues depending on the routes the eggs take to arrive to you, and SFH could be a bit more difficult, like some other breeds, and if you have a "bad" route (horrible employees shaking boxes, X-rays, etc) maybe it really takes a toll on them. Just speculating, but I have found it frustrating myself...I have so many locally bred chickens, but I can't hatch the ones I actually want! lol

My SFH are starting to pick up their laying a bit. If it keeps up, I may be shipping some eggs to MD for you next week.

Maybe they had rough transit?

KYTINPUSHER just hatched 8 for 8 of my swedes. I was dang impressed -- congrats Walli !!
Yes, I was amazed at how well they did.

One of the eggs had a completely blown aircell, and one had a hairline crack in it, but they ALL still hatched! I will try to post some pics tomorrow. I am so excited to see how they feather out!

I think I may have figured it out. Just had a conversation with a local friend and she knows someone who works in one of the main postal hubs that all of our packages go through before reaching our local post ofices. Apparently there is a postal worker who routinely shakes any package labelled with "fragile, eggs". That would explain it. Nice guy.

The unmarked packages have hatched the most eggs. Guess I need to have my eggs sent unmarked and take my chances.

and the 2 chicks I hatched from eggs I got from Icatty!

To show you have to register them with a name so on number 9 she got the name Sot Flicka! In Swedish this means Pretty Girl! She is by far my most friendly and when I reach into cage she jumps on my arm and does not want to leave me! Number 2 is a rooster and he gained the name Oskar which is also a Swedish name....I thought since they have to be named why not just give them Swedish names! The Two I hatched at the bottem will have to wait to get named till I can tell sex....still figuring out some names for the others I think the black one is the other rooster and I believe the rest are girls!!

any name suggestions!

I don't think you have to have a name, most of mine don't... but i do have permanent bands on them (crimped on aluminum) so refer to band number instead of a name. i'm planning on using wing bands in the future. especially for my feather footed varieties.

there really isn't a registry either, unless you mean on the show entry form...
