Swedish Flower Hen Thread

So sorry for your loss! If I saw the dog, I'd shoot it. No - it wouldn't be going home!

Look into electric poultry netting. It will keep dogs and most other critters out!

So sorry... I'd shoot it too, and I love dogs!! What a horrible loss for you.

Poultry netting works well. Good luck!

I haven't been able to hatch but 3 SFH, and I have tried several times. In fact, shipped eggs don't work for me. Local eggs, though, do great for me (or did...I am having a little trouble right now because of the heater coming on and off twice a day in the house. We will see if any of what I started a couple weeks ago hatch). I think there may be issues depending on the routes the eggs take to arrive to you, and SFH could be a bit more difficult, like some other breeds, and if you have a "bad" route (horrible employees shaking boxes, X-rays, etc) maybe it really takes a toll on them. Just speculating, but I have found it frustrating myself...I have so many locally bred chickens, but I can't hatch the ones I actually want! lol
I thought I'd read that, maybe here in this thread? It's really frustrating for sure.. I just want them to hatch so badly!! Maybe if I didn't care as much they would..

There are probably many factors contributing, I agree. I still have 4 going strong at last candling but I'm not touching them too frequently as I don't wish to harm them. There is one that's so big the brinsea mini won't turn it! It just pushes it along so I moved it to the hovabator. lol

I hope your next try turns out well!

To show you have to register them with a name so on number 9 she got the name Sot Flicka! In Swedish this means Pretty Girl! She is by far my most friendly and when I reach into cage she jumps on my arm and does not want to leave me! Number 2 is a rooster and he gained the name Oskar which is also a Swedish name....I thought since they have to be named why not just give them Swedish names! The Two I hatched at the bottem will have to wait to get named till I can tell sex....still figuring out some names for the others I think the black one is the other rooster and I believe the rest are girls!!

any name suggestions!
So pretty!!! Thanks for posting pics! I have one that looks just like your mostly white splash pullet. She was one of the friendliest in the coop and has gotten prettier with time. It took her coloring a while to develop. I named her Shasta because she's the color of Shasta daisies. Most of mine have names but I band them as well. My oldest roosters are Mogwai and Thor plus Axel. Names sometimes come with time for us. I say be patient and they'll let you know what they should be called. Good luck with them!

ps. I try to use flower or swedish names, except for Cinnamon girl in my avatar. She just looked like cinnamon to me and it stuck. lol

My chickens' first snow!

Gunnar - gunning it!

Ginger was the first to venture out in the cold white stuff.

Ginger and Astrid under the bird feeder.

Cool pics! Your birds have lovely coloring. My juveniles wanted nothing to do with the snow. They just looked at me like I was crazy and stayed in the coop all day.

Ok. I've been really wanting some SFHs, I'm still thinking about buying hatching eggs, but in case that doesn't work out, I would like some chicks too. (Even though I don't need anymore chickens....:idunno )
Anyone selling and/or shipping SFH chicks? Thanks and please send me a message. Kinda wanna start a SFH project to help promote the breed!

I have eggs, chicks and juveniles available for sale that I can ship. Just pm me if interested. :-)
