Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Quote: if you want a GREAT dual purpose breed, try Dorkings. they're the ORIGINAL meat bird, tracing their roots back over 2000 years. 8)

look up yellow house farm. joe's got pics of his birds plucked and bagged. and WAY better taste and texture than any other breed i've tried. even roos over a year old are still pretty tender.
Excellent site, thank you! Lots of food for thought..

What they are supposed to be and what they are in reality might be two different things. A couple people have reported 3.5lbs dressed. Jmo but that doesn't sound like a good dual purpose bird. If I'm going to feed a bird for 6-8 mos, even if it's just my culls, I'd better have something more than 3.5lbs or that's a breed I'll probably be getting out of.
That is your choice. Every breed had their following... As for feeding, mine eat very little. They free range and fend for themselves mostly. In fact they seem to prefer table & garden scraps to feed.

The Swedish Flower Hen doesn't sound like the breed for you.

Birds with higher meat yield tend to eat more and are therefore more expensive to keep until they are big enough to process. SFH are known for their intelligence, good disposition and great free ranging skills. Most of us don't keep them for their meat, though the extra roos are tasty.

Wow we have quite the VA group going on. I know on the VA thread we have been talking about meeting up at the Gilmanor swap in May

Who on this thread got their original SFH from Greenfire?

I got my three gals from Greenfire. They were actually subsitutes for Breda as they did not have enough to make the six chicks I ordered. LOVE them and am looking for a rooster now.

If you're worried about shipping chicks from Greenfire, don't be. Their shipping is first rate. If you are really worried, you can pay the extra to have them overnight/air shipped, but I don't believe it's necessary. Just try to ship during temperate times (spring and autumn). I have ordered twice from Greenfire: first arrival in late March 2012 from FL to VA. Second ship date (the one with the SFH) was mid October, 2012 and again, from FL to VA.

And for eye candy - here are some pics of my three girls. I'm still trying to decide on names, so any suggestions would be great.

The gold and black crested girl.

This girl is crested and the sweetest chicken. What doesn't show up so well is the blue/lav part of the feather just before the white mottle. You can see the blue/lav in her wing feathers.

This girl is not crested but her color is stunning in person. Pearl gray (lavender) with white mottles and gold head and lacing in her hackles.

I'm thinking of adding a red roo to the mix.

I don't remember who it was now that was talking about the dark lines & mottling on the legs of SFH, but here is a pic of a young roo of mine who has it. I hope the pics come out as he was not happy about being stalked today LOL Next I'll post a pullet with it on her legs...

HIs name is 'Arne' after my Father In-Law who passed away.

I wish I could have gotten a better pic of him, he's really beautiful, but can't tell in these pics. He's the one in the middle in this last pic.
