Swedish Flower Hen Thread

K, so sorry for your loss. What a gorgeous guy. And yeah, why is it always the ones we like?

Justin, that is wonderful! I don't have black ones (although one of my little roos is black and red and white, too cool), but I might have some eggs in the fall....assuming I have more than one pullet, LOL. We are doing something similar and working on being self-sufficient. I'm putting in a 12,000 square foot garden because I want most of our food to come from here on our farm. Hubby is going to be furloughed at some point...we might actually need it to eat!

Well guys I am happy to say all that I have been working so hard for is finally paying off! I have been working 2 jobs along with going to school (and doing the 4H stuff for my last year

). The older man that was helping me out with everything and who I got the majority of my "layer breeds" from (even bought them and had some shipped from out of state) has recently passed away

and ALL his birds were left in his will to me are here and laying beautifully
smile.png
! He also left me a sum of money to help pay for the feed until all the birds are laying and paying for themselves! I am an upcoming farm and I am proud to say that....not many people my age even care about their food or how it gets to the store, but not me I am very interested in getting all of our food from right here on the farm! It is very very important to me to learn this because I feel this world is going to have to go back to the old ways some day...I really enjoy this hard work and keeping busy because I have been raised in a very religious family and brought up to believe the saying "idle hands are the Devils work shop" So this farming thing seems to fit me to a T!! Well I am glad you guys may have taken the time to read this so I really appreciate it and now that I am starting to make money I will be looking to add new bloodlines to my SFH chickens....SO if everyone who will have eggs for sale this summer please post here or message me a pic of your breeding stock so I can pick and choose which ones I want to go with first! Thanks Justin ps ID REALLY LIKE TO ADD SOME BLACK PULLETS TO MY FLOCK ANY IDEAS ON WHO HAS BEEN HATCHING BLACK PULLETS?!?!?!?

Justin - you have great things ahead of you. My girls are laying like crazy, so just say the word when you're ready for eggs. Lots of black-based Mille Fleur coloring - some with blue - coming from my group so far.

Way to go Justin! I have 2 black hens currently laying, and 2 black pullets that should be laying within the next few months. The two hens and one of the pullets are crested. I am open to a swap.

I'm curious. the guy who passed, was he the one that you got all the sfh from here a few months back? if so, sorry to hear he's gone, but glad to hear he found a good home for all his birds (and then some!)

i agree, some things need to change, which is why i'm trying my hardest to get these breeding pens set up and going asap, so i can start hatching out more dorkings (IMO the BEST meat/dual purpose breed out there! - gorgeous, friendly, broody, great free rangers with the tenderest and tastiest meat i've ever had! what more could you want?)

i'll try to get pics of bulldogma's baby roo and the 3 girls from her eggs in the next day or 3. tomorrow looks like i'll be repairing some fencing (again).

Good for you Justin, and best of luck to you on your new projects. I agree with your assessment of where we headed in this country/world. I, like you, enjoy working with the chickens, and in my garden. I also have lots of eggs. As you know most of my girls are red/white, but my roos were all dark (black/white or mahogany) I have only hatched out 8 from the new roos so far. They were all from the red/white pullets; there were two light that are looking like their moms (both pullets), one black/white, who looks to be feathering out mille fleur (pullet), 1 smokey brown, VERY mottled blue/white with some red (roo), 4 mahogany brown which I think will be mille fleur (2 roos, and 2 pullets) The mille fleur pullet and the two blue black pullets are laying now as well. Also I do have my breeding pens set up so I can pair up specific birds if I want. I have photos of all of my birds on my profile page. I will try and get updated photos of my little ones (they are about a month old now) One change is that I am down to three roos, as I culled KR5 due to a small side spur that I had not noticed previously.

no K the man I got my SFH from hes doing good He lives in Micanopy and I check in with him once in a while to see how hes doing! He is such a great guy!

The man the passed was an old family friend that I was helping him out then he saw how good I was with the chickens and things he set up a whole chicken coop and pen here (we built it after he bought supplies) and then he taught me everything I know about the farm/gardening and much more since that is what I wast helping him do I got thr chance to learn alot of good valuable knowlege.

Then he got bad off health wise and was sent to hospital and the birds here and was caringg for them then and he died.....all the birds left to me and they are all layers! If you look at my signiture it show all the other breeds I have mostly because of him and working for him!

ok i wondered, because i haven't seen any posts from the guy you got the sfh from in a bit... (k.i.forgot strikes again, can't remember his user name. LOL)

but it's nice to hear people helping each other out, especially the younger generation (you for example)... too many people are 'ME' centered nowadays, and don't want to work for what they want to have NOW...

Here is update pics of my birds!

tried to catch a pic of her walking out of coop but she jumped so I got an action shot!!

This rooster above started out just as black as could be!

ABOVE AND BELOW I call these 2 the twins! They are always close to each other and doing the same things!!

Above this is my favorite!

Above rooster is my favorite rooster! He is so pretty! Getting new hackles thats why it looks a bit bare up there and he was cleaning him self too (up under wings)

This is Miss Molly! She has gold and silver hackles and the hints of red on breast

Above is a better pic of one SFH pattern

I love her colors! Her tail is smoky gray and tips of white
