Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Whose eggs did the black/white come from? And I can't wait to see what you get from your trio.

Irony? The bird I offered to trade you (Astrid) is the only mature SFH I have that isn't broody! LOL!
eggs were those from Gilmanor, and yeah irony for sure. LOL but on the flip side, if I have 3 hens laying, that's even more eggs I can pass back to your broodies, and/or hatch out. LOL

this roo isn't the greatest maybe, but I like him. LOL
the back edge of his comb has 2 points side by side, like it's split almost. not sure if it was an early injury, side spurs gone nuts, or what... so we'll see what we get. he's also crested, with a crested and uncrested hen, plus the uncrested pullet(s)

i'm planning on keeping a gunnar chick for primary roo, though, once he's matured. then I won't have to worry about crested x crested.

I mentioned it before, but i'll say again... I've got 2 Gunnar sons that need homes. they're about 3 months old now, if I am remembering correctly.

oh and one younger one about 2 months old-ish.

Well here are a few Gunnar babies... gawky stage and terrible pics, but... figured BGM would bean me if I didn't share...

and for some reason I can't load the last two... argh...

But....if sfh are a breed that we would want to maintain in as close a proximity to the originals in the wild, it seems to me that having sprigs would not be a "survival issue" and they WOULD be propagating in a natural setting.

True.

And there lies the conundrum.

Do we allow the trait to continue as it very well may have for generations in the past?

Or do we breed these birds to our "standards of perfection" and cull against the trait, considering it a fault instead.

Food for thought...

Yes - they are a landrace breed and will not be recognized by the APA any time soon due to the color issue. I will primarily be focusing on my boys without sprigs (provided their all-over quality and health is good)... but it seems that a very high percentage of SFH cockerels do have sprigs.

What is everyone else seeing on this?
