Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Hi there! I'm new to SFH but have seven 2 month old chicks in the coop. I'm pretty sure that the farm I got them from does not have a very large breeding stock and was wondering if other people breed chicks from the same batches/orders or if this is a bad idea? Not sure if I'm explaining myself correctly, but I fear the low genetic diversity in this breed is dangerous to breed back to closely related individuals. Does anyone have any insight on this or experience increasing genetic diversity in their stock?

Now for my baby pics....

no it's not a problem to breed closely related groups, as long as you outcross now and then to bring in new blood...

use what you currently have and improve on it as you can.

I am very careful to try not to breed closely related birds and I tell everyone that I sell birds to that my flock is a small one with one rooster, and that if they want to breed these birds they should obtain some from other breeders. I also advise looking at parent stock and looking over potential purchases closely for any physical flaws, ( the oft mentioned split wing, crooked beaks, crooked toes, etc.)
And I want to say that I was not trying to bash any local breeders when I posted the question of who would be at Gilmanor. The reason I hesitate to deal with a particular breeder is because she has purchased hatching eggs from me, and has not kept track of who is who in her flock, so there is the possibility that I could get a bird that is related to my stock and I would not know how closely.
I have sold all my orpingtons, and given my mixes to my daughter, and added 2 coops and yards in order to keep my new breeding groups (Bazinga over BullDogMa, Bazinga over Tarheel Birdy, BullDogMa over Bazinga...you get the picture) separate. It could be the OCD, but at least I know who I can breed to who next year.

LOL well I know i'm not the one you're talking about... I have a pair from leigh and 2 unrelated hens I got from Alabama. all the rest of the chicks are eggs from leigh and I've got some of walli's eggs too. lockdown is tomorrow! going to try and keep the chicks separated until I can band to know who's who. I might just turn the empty bator into a second hatcher for now. that would ease a lot of confusion. LOL

my Alabama roo (crested) will be for sale at Gilmanor. no he's not perfect, but is very nice. i'm going to try and see if she can tell me who she got her sfh from so I know what lines he is.

Here are 5 of the 8 that hatched yesterday from KYTinpusher!
They are gorgeous!
More pics later today
Thanks again for the quality eggs KYT
8 of 9 hatched! My best hatch this spring, also my first year to SFH and hatching.
