Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Hi everyone- I've been lurking, trying to read back through about 3 months of posts. I have 3 SFH pullets (from straight run) who are almost 16 weeks old. Two of the three's combs are starting to develop and turn pink/red.

I have some BLRW too but I have decided to stick with the SFH

Here are a few pictures of my girls

^ Stripe-- who apparently doesn't like our miniature dachshunds

^ Our friendly Partridge-- she does like our dogs and loves to watch what we are doing. Where we are, she is close by, watching

^ Our camera shy Penguin. This is the best picture I could get of her. She is usually preening or digging for grubs

Don't mind the names-- DH named Strip and Penguin. I started calling Partridge that because she had partridge feathers as a chick. She is so curious!

I find my SF to be some of the more 'nosey" of the 10 or so breeds I have. They want to check everything out! lol Unfortunately one was so nosey that she flew over the fence to see what was over there and got killed by a dog. She looked much like your pretty grey one first pictured. It was a hard loss because she was my first ever SF and the only one I hatched from her batch of shipped eggs. She was also a very spoiled pet of my 7 yo daughter. Fortunately I have acquired MANY more since I hatched her! lol These are such neat birds!

They really are nosy. I have one roo that stands right there next to the dog dishes and waits until a dog turns their back and steals food, lol.

LOL try having them want to steal the horse's food... I've lost 4 to being stepped on by my blind horse... they have no fear of her and she can't see that they're in her way.

I think if I had to use a word to describe my SFH it would be spastic. LOL
I used to think they were just a little high strung, but they are a contradiction because they are so friendly and curious.
They simply do nothing in slow motion, but they are so curious they run to you instead of walk.
I have 6, 4 pullets and 2 cockerels, and the only one that has been too pushy (pecking is her game), is the mille fleur pullet.
She is just plain ole pushy and curious all rolled into one. She will peck you if you are in her way or she wants something from you, but it's not a mean peck, more like a "hey you" peck. She's a hoot. The cockerels Vacker and Dweezle are VERY laid back dudes.

I think my word would be 'pestiferous'. LOL I have also used the term 'excessively friendly' before. and you're right. they don't know how to walk. they run everywhere. kind of like my standard poodle.

maybe they're the spoos of the chicken world. very smart, inquisitive, friendly, and energetic. LOL

LOL- Maybe it is part of being a land race breed. You do not survive if you hang out and take your time strolling through the free range!!

One thing I LOVE to see -
My one young girls always screeches every time she runs from the coop to the wooded area (open overhead). You can tell she's very concerned about those open skies.
If Rooster Boy ("he who has remained nameless") hears her or notices that any of them are going to come across there, he immediately sprints over there to escort them across the open area.

Got my first SFH eggs last week.

I had to make sure I knew who was doing the deed. So I now have two crested pullets from Florida that have begun laying and a 3.5 month old pullet from Bulldogma still growing out.
