Hang in there! It looks like this will be tougher winter than we have had in some time. They are calling for the coldest temperatures here on Monday night than we have had in over twenty years. Lots of freezing rain today. Had a heck of a time just getting one of our cars home after church. Chipped a lot of ice, spread a lot of cat litter, and dug up a lot of gravel on the sides of the road to finally get my car up a hill road that was like glass with ice.

SunnySkies, here is a picture of that double crested roo I talked about. So far this is only picture I can find. I took some face views of him as an adult but so far can't find them. He was about 3 months old here. He is second from left. His 3 hatchmates have crests about half the size of his. As he got older, his crest got even bigger.

ok here's some pics to cure the winter blah's...

the most recent group to migrate to the great frozen tundra of Virginia...
playing chickie tennis watching me make their dinner... hatched November 13th.

the next group hatched November 29th and December 9th (with 'tweener being a late bloomer. due Nov 29, acutally hatched December 2nd)

'tweener is on the right. slow to get going, he's about the same size as the group hatched a week after he did.

and the youngest group, hatched on Jan 1.

the older chick in this pic was added when they were a day old, to teach them all about fermented feed. she's since gone back to the other brooder with her own hatchmates.

Are SFH particularly prone to heart disease? I've not had this problem with any other breeds I've kept, even Jersey Giants where you'd think the generally larger size would lead to more organ stress. Some of my cockerels are reaching what appears to be the "danger range" in age and I'm wondering if I should set some eggs just in case or wait it out to see who succumbs to it v who prevails and breed from those without the heart problem.

I would say probably not specifically prone to it, but like other animals and people, maybe some family lines have a higher incidence than others? I would say go ahead and breed, personally. if there ends up being a problem you can always refrain from breeding those offspring. and keep them for an egg pen or eat them. just my 2c...

Hi Tx Flowers,
You don't live that far from me. I'm in Boerne, just northwest of San Antonio.
My daughter lives in Porter, which should be pretty close.
I visit her frequently. In another month I am going to go through my sfh
and pick out my favs and sell the others. Are you by any chance looking for
anything in particular? We're NPIP.
Diane
