Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Leigh, I'm so sorry about Sorenson's loss. Oddly, I had a rooster die with similar symptoms. I had him necropsied by a veterinary pathologist -- my state will do it for free, and even though I'm a vet, why not take advantage of a pathologist nearby -- and there was no sign of heart disease, and in fact, she could not determine a cause of death. I have his full brother here if none of his sons work out....I agree....these red and white ones are delightful. ETA: Sorenson was an early March baby, came directly from GFF, about 3 weeks younger than Viking, which came in my first GFF shipment. I had four roosters colored exactly alike in that shipment. I kept one, you got one, and the coons took two (sigh...but their loss led to me getting the dogs).
SunnySkies, here is a picture of that double crested roo I talked about. So far this is only picture I can find. I took some face views of him as an adult but so far can't find them. He was about 3 months old here. He is second from left. His 3 hatchmates have crests about half the size of his. As he got older, his crest got even bigger.
Oh EEK!!!!! That is sure not what a SFH should look like!! Cute, but way too much, huh. I certainly can see why you let him go. Well, on one hand, I won't have to worry about it....the one that had the most trouble hatching (vaulted) died on his own the other night. Another one, normal skull, passed too. On the other hand, I have sold the rest and made it very clear they should be careful to avoid crested x crested crosses to reduce embryonic mortality as well as chick deaths and then issues later on...why create something so easily avoided? ETA: and another thought....breeding crested x crested might be letting them do their thing, but...when you think SFH, what comes to mind? Is it a bird with no crest, a small crest or one with a huge crest? Nowhere in the writings of the breed description that I have seen does it say a large crest is acceptable. No, there isn't an official SOP, but I have seen various writings, and none say large crest. For example: http://www.swedishflowerchickens.com/breedinformation.html Note "small coif" and addresses that those birds come from one specific area. That sort of makes me wonder if there are actually two sub-breeds of birds that look similar but are different in some respects.

Sunny - you said you got a dog. How did you train it for chickens? Is your dog able to run with the chickens? I keep revisiting this for myself thinking perhaps a dog would deter hawks when I'm not around.

I got two livestock guardian dogs, brother and sister Great Pyrenees. They were born IN a chicken coop and have shown no aggression to the birds....but they will catch and love them to death. So training consists of teaching them that isn't acceptable and when I'm not able to supervise, I keep the dogs away from the birds, where they can't catch them. When I mess up and let them have access to the birds without supervision, they will bother the poultry trying to play with them. But they stopped my predator issues 100% day one. I am told this pestering of birds will stop when they reach about 2 years of age. Currently, the dogs have free range of the place at night and are kenneled during the day unless I am outside.

A friend of mine has an LGD that can catch hawks, if the hawks come low enough, and has several times. Mine notice and bark at overhead large birds.

The LGDs do earn their keep for sure.

I got two Pyrenees sisters 3 months ago. They are 4 1/2 months old now. These were my first LGDs. I happened to take this today. Not good picture because it was far away and with my phone but she was laying there while the chickens were pecking at her eyes and feet. I did see one walk over her lol

SunnySkies, how old are your pups?

Mine are now 8 months old. Got them at 10 weeks. The naughties started around 4-5 months, where they wanted to love all the chickens to death, and it's really just my girl. She is more mischievous than my boy. She is put looking for or causing trouble, and he tags along. But if they both start in barking their aggressive bark, I'm right behind them to see what is going on. They already chased off a fox. He is huge....85+ lbs. His sister is leaner. They got into a FIGHT the other day. No idea why or how, but it scared even me, and dogs are how I make a living.

I am extremely excited to be picking up my first few Swedish Flower Hens in the morning... Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Now, that I'm going to have few in the booder and grow out pen, I need to decide if the ones I'm culling are going to be rehomed or become Sunday dinner.

Hello everyone! I am looking to add to my flock of SFH and wanting to add more color. I am looking for a non crested lighter color roo or two. I am in Crossville, Tn. Please let me know what you have. Thanks!

well, I have a number of them growing out but won't be able to make a definite decision for at least another month or so, depending on how fast the chicks I have in the brooder mature too. I've got at least 4 roos right now that will probably be available, but Leigh has first pic of the Sorenson chicks, and I am probably going to keep an extra as well, in addition to Gunnarsson and Confetti (the KY roo)... the oldest hatched mid October, and I've had groups about every 2-3 weeks since then.
