Swedish Flower Hen Thread

um...  there's no difference in taste or nutrition between a fertilized egg and an unfertilized one...  unless you incubate them.  if you're worried about the red specs sometimes found in eggs, that is entirely dependent on the girl and whether she's 'leaky' when she ovulates.

Yes, I totally understand that but customers are picky and repeatedly state they do not want any surprises. It's just easier to tell them there are no roosters so there is no chance of surprises. People want what they want and they don't want a science lesson when they buy eggs. I'm not really sure why my husband doesn't want roosters but he is pretty firm on the matter. At this point I really want to keep them, I just have to separate the breeds that have roosters from my laying hens. I have plenty of room to build multiple large runs and coops I just have a limited budget.

Clearly you have too many roos. I'll just take BV off your hands to help you out.

All the girls would be heartbroken to loose "BV" , of course I'm about to rearrange for breeding pens & the 3CL pullets will be going to live w/ "Good King Henry" but maybe they won't mind too much ;>
GoodKingHenry (keeping company w/ a couple EEs in the quarantine pen)

But "BV" will still get to have a larger flock as I'm going to let him watch over those EE gals and a few of the OE pullets in his current grow out flock since I'll be able to tell the eggs apart from the SFH by color and will be eating the non pure eggs :)
BV free ranging today w/ the current group, so far he is keeping peace w/ 3 other sfh cockerals plus at least one mutt boy who is leaving soon...

got any more pics from the mille pullet? the color says girl, but for 3 months old, she's got an awful lot of wattle going on... I think... (sorry, don't shoot the messenger!)

and the one from Leigh's, may not be from Sorenson but may be Mace or Blue... Sorenson throws only blue and splash I think. at least that's all I've gotten from him so far
one from LLeigh's maybe a splash -- that is a QUESTION I'm seeing black in the tail but white tips so does that me splash or mottling??? so confusing...

Fey where in TN are you? Do you ever sell any of your SFH

Here is a better picture of the *white on tail feathers* of the Roo#2 (un named uncrested from Leigh's eggs)

So is the Splash & therefore a Sorenson son as we thought originally?
or is that black based and therefore more likely a mixup and from Mace or Blue (which would be lovely also as all 3 as we know are stunningly handsome Roos!)
I'm mainly just trying to keep my records clear for breeding history in case it ever matters in the future

Ok so here is the pullet w/ large waddles ;/

She does act like a she , and none at all of the bright fire red-orange like the boys get on their wings.
pls pls pls be a girl...

What say ya'll?

Oh my, I just noticed how looong "her" tail feathers are getting compared to the others in this photo, oh no...the irony since I bought the other boys thinking I had all girls...
hum, this maybe a little issue for getting lots of hatching eggs soon, as if these 4 are ALL boys then I just have the 1 hen "Flo"

That boy is a standard Mille Fleur and likely a son of Mace or possibly Blue. (More likely Mace, though.)

This boy is black-based MF cockerel. I posted this chart earlier and it is helpful in looking at the outcomes that you will get in breeding the SFH combinations.

Ok so the #2 Roo IS black based as I originally thought, and that bit of white can be ignored (doesn't mean splash) b/c of the overall MF pattern. <deep inhale, think I got it...>

So the only real difference between Roo #1 "BV" & #2 "working on a name" is the crest, otherwise when crossed w/ say, my Hen Flo (Black based) they will flow the same flow chart for color options, that meaning Black/Blue/Splash all possible base colors.
Flo-sorry not recent, she looks way more hen now

The 2 suiters #1 "BV on left, #2 on right

btw BV stands for "Black Viking" which is actually a thing, as in the Sagas reference it (Viking = adventurer/those who went on adventures. and thus there is much debate as to the meaning of black in that context but actual black skin color is not out of the question and since this bird had quite an adventure to travel to me it all fits). Now to find an equally fitting name for #2 :)

The first picture looks very hen to me. The second picture is her again in the back, right? With two roosters nearest?

Easiest way to know is you compare the width of the comb to the known roosters.

I thought I mentioned it in this very same thread already, but here goes again.

When viewed from the top they're roughly twice as wide at that age or slightly younger.

hen comb: { }
rooster comb { }

See how the roosters are more "mottled" or whatever that "flinging paint" design is? See how the roosters have much less gradual color changes? That's another sign.

EDIT: If you go back further in this thread, you'll see pictures of my birds and she looks identical, yet crested, to my hen 'Shaeneequh'. Never mind, I'll just add it below.

yes that was her in back on the right (grey mutt on the left beside her)

Well I'm holding out hope she is a girl, but "she" sure has sprouted extra waddles and tail feather this week :(
