Swedish Flower Hen Thread

I have no idea if it works with them or not... If I remember, some here had fairly accurate results from attempting to feather sex them a day or two after hatch, while some argued that the technique does not work on this breed. I kinda hope it does since I looked at all 28 of mine this afternoon and it APPEARS that I have a lot more girls than boys. :) (Though to be honest I've never tried this before and am just going off pics of how to do it...) We'll see I guess!

13 new babies!!! I had a friend set 36 eggs, of which 23 made it past day 7. Of the 10 that didn't hatch, a few weren't fertile (my poor roo needs some assistance :p ). The ones that didn't hatch died very late, one had it's beak in the air cell. So sad! What's the latest any of you have had SFH's hatch out?

I'm happy with the variety and am looking forward to seeing how they're going to feather out. Here are babies and some of the mamas.

I purchased a dozen eggs off of ebay. They were lost in the mail, set 9 days later. Two hatched. Of the two, one doesn't appear to be a full blooded SFH....so sadly, I'll sell them both as barnyard mixes. I'm sharing in order to help people recognize when they don't have a pure bred SFH.

@Bulldogma
New avatar! I like :D

Love seeing all the new photos of everyone's birds :D
Thanks!

As I was reading through the older posts on this thread, there was a couple discussions last year about feather sexing SFH chicks. Is everyone still in agreement that it usually works with this breed?

OK - I've had mixed luck with this, BUT - it seems to be right more than it's not. LOL!

Oh - and guess who laid her first egg today? Here's a hint:

Unless any of us can locate another SFH her color here in the US, I won't be selling her eggs for a while. Once we get moved and I get my bator up and running, I'll be hatching all her eggs to try to see if this is a dominant or recessive gene...

After I have a good idea and plenty of her chicks, (and I get some eggs to wildhorseannie) I may auction future eggs.

Apparently this is a very common color in Sweden. Perhaps GFF only got one carrier of the gene that suppresses the expression of red?

She may be a mix but she a very interesting plumed bird. It would be interesting to find out just exactly with what she was mixed.

Thanks!

Beautiful! Are there any pics of her as a chick?
I've got a bunch of SFH, RB and OE eggs in LD. The OEs started hatching a day early. I'm still waiting for pips from my other two breeds. They were set on the same day but......

11 SFH eggs & 13 CCL eggs set in incy. Temp set @ 99.5° humidity @ 30%.......lowest I can get it to go right now.

Any suggestions?

Sooooo excited!

The humidity should be OK. Since they were just set, initially the humidity will be a little higher but should taper off as the days go by. Did any of your late eggs hatch? I know you were hoping the last four would make it.

Hatching for me today are 8 CCL eggs and 6 Jubilee Orpingtons. At eleven days into incubation, I have 11 blue wheaten/wheaten ameraucanas. Yesterday, I set 26 SFH from Leigh (Thanks!!!) and 8 Jubilee orpingtons.

Late eggs never hatched. :(

Good luck on your hatches!
