Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Cream Legbars have been bred with crests for many years. They do not have this same problem. There are those who will try to tell you that you need uncrested Cream Legbars to breed to crested but it is just not true. I have been breeding CLs for 2 years, breeding true with NO problems with crested X crested. Same thing with all the other breeders I have talked to, including breeders in the UK where the US Cream Legbar was sourced. Just as you don't need uncrested Polish or uncrested Silkies to breed correct crest, Cream Legbars have been bred with crests long enough their genetics have adapted to it.

The problem with SFH is that the US stock had uncrested birds first, then brought over crested stock to add to it and that is causing problems because the uncrested flocks are having trouble adapting to the genetics so suddenly. At least that is my understanding.
I have that same understanding regarding SFH and CLB. I was just suddenly concerned that my CLB's could throw an uncrested w/o me knowing why. I'd hate to sell someone eggs and have them get cross if an uncrested pops up. What you are saying is that I shouldn't have that problem since my cockerel and all the pullets are crested. I know this is off SFH subject - just clarifying the crested thing. Thanks for all the input.

As per all the previous discussion I went and really LOOKED at the lead cockerel.

OH DEAR - He exhibits prime example of carrying one crested gene. I thought he was un-crested. These feathers have just popped up in the last month or so.

Would like to see side view and a rear view. From this view, he appears to be uncrested but I would not want to pass judgement from this direction alone.

Here is the front, the last was an angled side view.

That looks like a very small wisp of a crest. Maybe its just feathers?

I think what you are seeing alongside the comb are head feathers above the eyebrow, if you will. Based on these pictures, this SFH is non-crested. My main SFH roo before he was lost, was similar and was not crested.

Pictures of the birds I used to have:

I would be very happy if he is uncrested as I've been counting on it! I don't know about the earlobes. These are from GFF, October 2013 hatch

Just candled , my trap nest egg from the SFH pullet IS GROWING, so Roos are doing their job etc.
I'm going to trap nest the Hen b/c I think she is hiding a nest while free ranging, but we'll see what she puts in the mini-dog carrier turned trap nest box tomorrow....

I still haven't decided which girls of the older bunch I'm keeping, but debating between the splash, the blue and the darkest girl who's looking like a very dark mille fleur. the blue looks more like a very red splash with very little white, the splash is probably 50/50 white/red. thoughts? these are the 4 girls (counting the mille), I'm choosing 2 of them to stay. they're from leigh's flock.

these girls will go with this boy... he's the only roo I have that's unrelated to anyone else... the other roos are from Leigh's flock as is 1 mature hen and the girls pictured below. the other 2 mature girls are from another unrelated flock.

the girls

the blue is the one BEHIND the mille girl here. who's also a possibility.

then I have these 2 who will go with the youngest roo I'm keeping, who's from birta and mace.
camera battery was dead so I had to use the cell phone. LOL
the splash is from Leigh's flock, the blue is from my own blue girl.
