Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Thanks KYTinpusher. I'm reading up on the SFH right now and its very interesting.

My mistake! I went back and read the Craigslist post of the nice lady I bought them from. She received them from Greenfire as days-old chicks in "early February." Sorry about that!

With the amended knowledge that these two birds are three months old, not two, how does that affect the thoughts of whether Anna (and Olaf for that matter) is a boy or girl?

There is a chance for pullet, check out this girl who really was looking like a Roo for a few weeks, then She stopped messing w/ my head & went back to being a pullet and started laying eggs (yes seen her do it, no question)

When she looked like a cockerel for awhile w/ the pink waddle coming in strong & tail feathers sprouting out all in a few days time:

Yesterday, now that she produces about 4 eggs/ week she still has a lot of waddle & comb but it doesn't interfere w/ the eggs ;>

So have hope, you *might* have a pullet w/ extra waddle.

Leigh...look who jumped in my lap last evening when I let the chickens out!

LOL! I am SO not surprised! Ali's babies make up for their lack of color with personality! I am preparing your boy's little sister to be shipped to OH in the next week with a couple of her friends. She's going to be really hard to let go of, but the lady who is getting her wants some younger chickens... because hers all range in age from 11-13 years!!! When I heard that, I knew who I wanted to send into a life like that! Plus, I've got her mom and her older sister, both of whom are snuggle-bugs!

I'm so happy you got an Ali-baby (even if he's a he and not a she - LOL)! I'll be interested to see what his personality is when he hits sexual maturity. My guess is that he'll still be friendly, but become more standoffish... but who knows?

I am thinking about breeding him with the little brown hen....jumping the gun a bit, but hey a girl had to dream. Not sure what a Wheaten chick looks like but I think she is one!

Ok I think I may try hatching SFH one more time. Who here sells eggs? Needs to be from a healthy flock with no respiratory diseases (had to cull my flock 2x due to dishonest people). I'm in WI so will need shipped. Please email with pics or website that shows your birds to [email protected]

I had a similar experience this spring but not due to individual's dishonesty rather more due to ignorance. I had acquired two ameraucana cockerels for specific breeding purpose that turned out to be asymptomatic carriers of MG & MS. This resulted in the culling of my entire flock of adult chickens. Fortunately, I had kept many eggs and chicks segregated from the exposed flock. This, in addition to some help from my "chicken friends," I am now well on the way to recovery.

I am sorry for your loss of your flock. I know first hand the pain that is involved in that loss.

We ship chicks and hatching eggs. Our flock is leaving at the end of the month though, so if you'd like some speak now or forever hold your peace, LOL. (They are leaving because their hatching requirements don't line up with our program, not through any fault of theirs. They are a wonderful breed!)
