Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Jeremy. Jose and Peanut are amazing! I was disappointed to have 3 little splash chicks, but if any of them turn out like those two I would be thrilled! I can't wait to see how my 7 little guys feather out. I have one just beginning to show a crest at two weeks old.

Ok.....Here is a group picture of my gang. There are 13 and 1 little stinker slipped out of the camera view.

I still think only 2 rooster...waiting and watching for wattles or crows or something.

and this is Peanut.

This bird is a beaute! I have one much like him and of my crested cockerels he is my favorite to look at. Unfortunately, he is also my most assertive bird too. I let them all out with the big flock and all but "Bay" just went about his business. He proceeded to run and jump at the hens with his hackles up, pulling on their neck feathers if he got the chance. I pick him up from the pen and he fights me to get away..not struggle, but fights. Sadly, I won't be keeping him. REALLY bums me out. Think I'll stick with my original plan to keep the first two boys, even though the crested one doesn't have the WOW factor. He is very gentle and is happy in the #2 spot.

Peanut is my most gentle and sweet (so far - he has recently been pacing the fence on the other side from my most aggresive one). He was getting picked on by the other 5 boys so, after dispatching a very gorgeous but evil Wellie to freezer camp, I put him with the egg flock for now. (I have been saving eggs from him and the almost lavender Ameraucana in that flock. Could make some interesting chicks.) He is doing his job - maybe he's gentle because he's tired. :) He will get his own SFH girl plus that Ameraucana who also has an amazing personality when I get a couple more pens put together so I will know which eggs/chicks are his.

I have a genetics question for those of you with more experience. I know that with Swedish Flower Hens you can get all colors, but in your experience could you get blacks if all of your breeders were light coloured? Thanks!

This is my flock and I am hatching browns, greys and blacks, no light chicks. I hatched 11 yesterday, 4 browns, 4 blacks and 3 greys (they have a home already and I did not get photos- hopefully the new owners will please post some pics!). I would be happy to trade a dozen of my eggs with someone who has light birds if they are looking for more variety!
