All My Swedes!

Here are the two I hatched the day after Christmas from Icatty

It got down to 12 degrees this morning up here
Wow, I know thats cold...I am from Lock Haven PA, do you know where that is? Its in Clinton County! The coldest I can remember is when my boy scout troop stayed in 20 below in Loganton PA for our winter camp out I wanted to go home!!

Quote: i may have a line on a crested cockerel, if i can talk her into a pullet too (trading for dorking eggs!) but that wouldn't happen till early march, so we'll see.

Hey Karen -- no updated pics of the older cockeral, but I just moved the 12/23 hatch out to a brand new brooder. They are LOVING it. I'm sure you can talk me into a pullet *lol* I already have the youngsters playfighting and combs starting nicely, and there are several of the calicos out there. Looking forward to the trip !

I had to give one of my roos a sharp lesson the other day. I was carrying some buckets to the faucet to fill, and I had a funny feeling he was following me. I glanced behind me, and that bird was RUNNING at me. He saw me look and was deterred.

But I caught him a few minutes later, carried him around for a while, and when I put him down, I held him down to the ground until he stopped struggling.

I get he is probably frustrated, having no girls, spring is coming (it sure felt like it last week), the buckets might have looked threatening, and he is now 6 months old and is teenaged. But he worried me. He has been perfectly respectful since.

I saw someone local on CL has some adult hens that lay colored eggs, so I can pull crossbreed eggs, and I'm toying with the idea of getting some. My coops are full, and I worry about disease. But it might make him happier.

If he gets worse, I don't know what I will do with him. This breed is known for good behavior...don't want a bad one.
I have had some VERY aggressive SFH roosters. Some are not as bad as others, but so far all of them have been more aggressive than my Ameraucana roosters. So far the only cure has been culling. I know its hard when the numbers are limited. I did try working with them, but only until I had replacements. Hope you have better luck. That being said the hens are the friendliest, most curious chickens that I have ever had. By far my favorite in 30 years of chicken keeping!
