Swedish Flower Hen Thread

crested to crested yes, you'll get crested but might also get vaulted skulls (not good, potentially fatal prior to hatch) larger crests sometimes.

non-crested, you get more of the same.

crested to smooth you'll get a mixture. this is my preference since i like the varieties.

OK, so KYTinpusher and I did another experiment. She shipped eggs to another BYCer who has big fancy bators and hatches LOTS of chicks who lives about 15 miles from me. The eggs came to the same post office, thus handled by the same people (our local PO is awesome), but our mutual friend picked them up and hatched them. Well, tried. She only got one chick to hatch. She hatches shipped eggs all.the.time, except for Polish; she can't get them to hatch.

So it's not me, I think. I think something happens coming here specifically to this area that ruins SFH eggs. They made it to lockdown and died. Just like what happened to my attempts.

So, those of you who hatch shipped SFH eggs successfully, what exactly are you doing? Maybe a tweak will help. Seeing some of these lovely birds here makes me want to try again.

There's a gal breeding these ladies about 20 minutes from me. Thinking about getting one.

Are you looking for a particular color SFH? I am in the Olathe KS area, I only have the red/brown mottled but know of others in this area that have other colors also.

@JBarrett

Are these one of the colors you are looking for (excuse the rumpled crest and white wing feathers--we have been in breeding pen for 3 weeks and have been rather twitterpated!)

Sven

Hattie--again please pardon the mussed crest

camera shy Flora (wing feather due to current twitterpated state LOL)

Lucy (only 5 months-no boyfriend for her yet!)

except the blue (i already have 3) those are the EXACT colors I have been looking for and the black hens too but I really want those bronze and white ones!!!!!!!!!!!!! ALOT

i don't do ANYTHING... i put them in the incubator, candle once or twice along the way (7 and 14 days usually). candle again before i put them in the hatcher and open when they start talking to me.

plus another 20 or so of old and chilled/frozen eggs found outside on a warmer day. LOL i set 36 of them, 20 are still going. and here i figured maybe the 4 or 5 newest only.

plain old hovabator with fan and auto turner. i dry incubate everything, only putting water in the hatcher to get it up to 50-60%. once they start hatching it'll jump over 70 for short periods until they dry off. if i open the hatcher to pull out chicks, i squirt some hot water onto the paper towel lining the bottom to quickly replace the humidity lost when i opened it.

bulldogma can vouch for my methods.
