Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Will be interesting to see what you end up with. Sounds like they might be a good production and disposition cross. For you more experienced breeders, does the male to female hatch ratio depend more on the rooster or equally btwn mom n dad? My orphingtons and australorps seem to average about 6 pullets to 5 roos in each hatch but my americana hens and auracana/blue copper maran rooster consistantly give me a 2 to 1 ratio of female to male. Breed trait? Great luck? I'm not sure but do know that ratios are remaining constant both in my hatches and the eggs I've shipped. My first year of incubating had the same lousy results as yours but then I bought a better incubator w fan and inside humidity control and turners. Now my results are consistantly excellent and if you really like the thought of hatching your own eggs you may want to think about upgrading your equipment and giving it another go. Theres no such thing as too much equipment. :)

I recently hatched a SFH x black Orpington, and the chick is obviously carrying the mottling gene. Same thing happened a few years back with a Sussex x Orp cross, so I think you'd get something lovely. Maybe with a bit more heft.

I bought a flock of seven SFH adults from another TN breeder, got 3 more hens from Contrastphoto, add them to the 5 I already had, and 30 eggs due any day....I think we're going to have a mighty big bunch of Swedes! I just can't get enough of these birds.

I left out "black" since he/she prob isn't sfh (oh...anyone want to guess what breed black is? You can see black here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...eeping-thread-ots-welcome/11050#post_10864487

Black actually might be a SFH. Sometimes Mottled birds loose their mottling as they get older, if you look at these pics, there is some slight mottling on her chest.

Even at 14 weeks old, she still has some leakage.

yes, that is me. back yard flock and no lofty goals.

i have sort of spent my wad trying to get swedes here to no avail. to others i would say: ship chicks. you know what they say about hindsight and 20/20. i'm done.

so wondering if anyone knows if together a speckled sussex and a swede would def have a speckled baby. ie, is it the same speckled gene?

Ok for what my 2 cents is worth. I have the SFH mille fleur rooster
and we have a Silver Sussex. The Sussex are way larger than my SFH so it has never crossed my mind to mix, however i get your thoughts of the speckled sussex if you like speckled/polka dot birds. I am sure there are others better at the genetics than i that could give you the % and the chance of a non speckled bird (the mille has columbian /mottled backgrounds). If you are just looking for enjoyment birds do whatever your heart desires to enjoy!

As far as chicks /etc did you check the SFH map that was made either on here or Save the SFH thread, it shows locations of lots of east coast people that have these birds to see if we could form a "supply chain". You might be able to find someone reasonably close to you.

Had my first chick hatch over the weekend--made me laugh cuz its black--LOL, but in my case i think that black will soon turn to baby daddy mille colors. 2 more due to hatch this weekend, been way to busy to take pics of baby but will try this weekend

actually, in my experience with mottled cochins, they get MORE as they mature and get older, not less... though the first feathers may show more than the next moult. but once they mature they get more with each moult.

i agree each molt brings more white.

I am just guessing but is there any chance that little black may be a black mottled Java. Its always so hard to tell detail in pictures, but the leg color would be right.
