Swedish Flower Hen Thread

So sweet.

These are the ones I got from Green Fire. They aren't in great focus because chicks are quick and I'm no professional photographer!

"Redhead" chick 1:

"Redhead" chick 2:

Redheads together:

Grey chick: pale yellow down with white/light grey feathers coming in. Does this one have a small crest or just a peanut head?

Peach chick: Yellow down with white/peach-tinted feathers coming in.

White chick: Yellow down with white/grey feathers coming in. There's a little bit of a pattern to some of the feathers but some are solid white.

It is going to be so much fun seeing how they go from chick down, to juvenile colors, to adult plumage. From looking at all the pictures you folks have shared, I have a colorful transformation to look forward to!

What age can you start sexing SFHs? What do you look for?

I have 4 four-week -olds. The crested one seems to have a slightly bigger comb at this point, but not reddening yet. I can already tell my same age NHs & Wyandottes apart, but these guys are tough.

Available is my Swedish Flower Hen Rooster. He is 5 months old and gorgeous! Red, orange, black and white feathering. Slightly crested. He has started scaring my daughter so I need to sell him. This picture was taken at about 4 months. He is larger and more filled out now. I was hoping to breed him but his girlfriend isn't laying eggs yet..... We live in Colrain, MA.

It is so exciting to see more and more people start raising and breeding these beautiful birds. I got a picture today of one of my pullets (actually, she's almost a hen!) that I thought was black. She is actually chocolate!

STOP IT!!!!
OMG - She's AMAZING! We need to get ki4got to weigh in on the genetic factors that produce this color as it won't be for certain your hen will throw more chocolate unless the cross is just right. I MUST have a bird like this!!!

The genetics of these birds never cease to amaze me. She hatched from my eggs and I don't have anyone else that showed any chocolate. I always thought she had hatched from one on my black hen's eggs (could be wrong on that, though), so I suppose the chocolate could be hiding in my black hen's genes.

I have a chick feathering in chocolate. It's a black mottled looking chick. I thought it was feathering in black but under the light it's chocolate color.

I thought you weren't keeping SFH.

They are just too pretty to resist, aren't they!

Of course, if it needs a home, let me know.
I have 10 chicks growing. Got a really, really good deal on them. Gave sunnyskies some and I kept the rest. I really do like the variety in their color. And the crests remind me so much of Legbar hens.
