Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Even my broody hens have trouble. I got 50% off the last try, but none the time before, with three amazingly dedicated ladies (one is still sitting...2 months for her. We are seeing if we can hatch from our Silkie roos). The shipping does something to them on some routes. The only eggs I have had any success with came from FL, PA and GA. All the rest -- different breeds, different shippers -- have died.

i just got 5 SFH eggs (and 7 birchen marans) yesterday in the mail, shipped from near Sacramento (i.e. not super-far, no planes involved), to put under my 5th broody this spring -- will see how they do!

I live outside the Houston area and the eggs I purchased from Texas of SFH eggs hatched. I have seen KYTinpusher and Bulldogma advertise their eggs but unsure of the distance to travel since further up north than the South and read to try to purchase eggs less than 4 to 5 states away. I just thought I would ask. Thanks for the input. I may break down and order from KYTinpusher next time. I think I have 50-50 on sex for the six I have one has crooked toes so she won't be a breeding hen but the others unsure. I have 50/50 for crested as well. I have two tri colored, one black and white and 2 red/white combos and 1 all white. I will try to get pictures to post in the near future. They are beautiful and I want to have more.

I recently shipped some to NM and the gentleman got a 100% hatch rate.

Okay, BDM...

Seems that eggs from SOME breeders do better than others and there is not significantly different packaging from one to another. Sometimes even shipped from the same post offices and same routes.....

Could viability possibly be at least partially a nutrition/health of flock issue rather than just shipping variabilities? As in, could the eggs be stronger, heavier, thicker albumen, better anchored, etc., depending variants in nutrition and thus result in a better hatch-rate despite jostling enroute?

My guess would be "Yes." I would think it would make a difference... but then, I haven't done any double-blind studies to prove this theory. LOL!

Thank you nice video
You're very welcome!
