Swedish Flower Hen Thread

I suspected as much but I am in denial. I really hope the two that hatched out yesterday are pullets. I have too many roos! I love your roo! He's handsome!!

Bulldogma,

After checking the hatching and eggs, I found that i made a mistake. Eilnor's egg has not hatched but it was indeed Astrid's egg that hatched naturally. All three hatched chicks are up, alert, & active.

Ginger's chicks:

The whole gang:

Well the chickens were out enjoying the cooler weather and so was I, so I got a few pictures of the SFH. I also have 8 chicks in the brooder - but they are mixed in with some others.

Frederick is going to a new home tomorrow.. He is a very pretty boy.

I think this has most of the SFH chicks, the Black ones, the white ones and the Buff ones are all SFH. The brown ones are Barnvelders or Speckled Sussex. I hatched out 2 Black, 2 Blue, 2 White? 1 Splash? and 1 Buff. I am keeping the Black and the Blue ones.

Redhen, I assume you went to h&h?

I just picked up three blacks from there, and two I suspect will not stay black. The feathers on the wings seem to be coming in a dark rusty color. The chicks cme out black -- I have had now a total of five black SFH chicks -- but so far, no black as they grow.

I killed my oldest SFH roo today. My littlest son was walking from the front yard to the back yard. Husband was occupied in the driveway, between front and back. I was near the barn. Older sons running around. Roo jumped the kid. That fast. With people around. My child is very, very lucky. He has a black eye and multiple scratches all over him. It only took a second. I waited until the roo went into bed, took him off the roost, and that was that. I have so many roos I am not risking putting up with a nasty roo.

I am discouraged though. None of my Cochin roos -- I have 5 of them -- have ever threatened a human, even with the babies in the coop and us messing with the hens. None of my backyard mixes (we have had ten, slaughtered 7, currently have 2) have ever threatened someone, even with crazy kids bothering them all the time. My EE roo is as polite as can be. But 2/3 of the SFH I have grown to adulthood have been ugly mean. They were all brothers I hatched from eggs from a breeder in FL that I bought off eBay. Waiting to see how the new groups go, which consist of GF stock and 2 birds hatched from KYTinpusher's eggs, and counting my blessings that I had no hens and thus have no descendants of those roosters. But more mean SFH might make me rethink this whole breed :( However, we played more with the first few and maybe that made them worse than they should have been.

So far all of my "black" chicks have changed as well. Little "Mohawk" was really dark black with a red Mohawk, and is now a beautiful blue/white. Her mom was black as a chick as well but matured to a beautiful pewter color. I have two little guys hatched by my broody, that I was very hopeful for blacks but they are now looking like they will be mille fleur colored. Hope yours stay black for you.
Mohawk now has no Mohawk.

Sorry about your son getting attacked. I have had Ameraucana/EE's for years and have never had an aggressive roo (to humans). But I am finding that the Swedish roosters are much more likely to be people aggressive as well. Two of my first three were extremely aggressive by about 9 months. Now my favorite of the roos from Kimberly35042, the non crested one, has gotten very aggressive. I just pulled him yesterday as well. I just won't take a chance with my grandson around. The Swedish hens are the most social of any chickens that I have ever had.

anyone have hatching eggs in VA (I am in the tidewater area)? I have a broody mama who needs some SFH babies. I would rather drive than ship, especially with the problems people have had with the post office... pm me please!

my older trio (was quad but the friendliest of them was stepped on by the horse, shattering his leg) is from Kimberly too, but I got them as juveniles when she passed thru. so far, he's been sweetness itself. then again he's also free ranging with a bunch of other roos who put him in his place regularly. so hopefully he won't get a bad attitude. if he does, i've got plenty of other roos from Gunnar's line.

Eggs from KYTinpusher have hatched!!! We now have our own SFH. Mailing was a little hard on the eggs but it they got here they were determined to hatch. Only one egg didn't hatch that had any development. YIPPPEEEE. My son has wanted some since he first saw a picture. He is 16 and calls them the "flower pot chickens"

Quote: I would be interested to see the pictures of the black chicks with the brown wings. Mine look black and white now.. always interested in seeing the different color variations.

Also sorry about the rooster attack. I wouldn't keep a roo that won't respect humans. I have had EEs for years and never had an aggressive roosters, I will have to see how my mixed bunch turns out now. My big SFH roo Stan is very respectful of distances with me. I walk towards him, he walks away quickly. When I crouch down if he looks at me I say "Hi Stan" and he backs off. I picked him up to move him last night and he submitted once I had him tucked under my arm. I have always heard if you have problems and want to be boss you carry them around - they get the idea sooner or later. I also didn't play with the youngsters, I have heard that lessens the respect. I did pick them up to put them outside - but I don't let them jump on me.

Thank you for the picture, this is what I am hoping my chicks will grow up like. I love the "Blue" chickens.

Stan is approximately 8 months old now, so I guess I will watch him.

Quote: Um.. no. At least I don't think so. The water barrels are to collect rainwater for the orchids. I do have grapes, apples, blueberries, peaches, pears, apricots, plums...
