Swedish Flower Hen Thread

I think my favorite non crested roo is going to have split wing...

Why is it always your favorite? None of the others from the same hatch have it. Disaapointed.

would anyone mind weighing in on whether you think this could be a sfh roo? he's about 12 weeks. On another thread, someone thought he resembled a sfh roo whose pic was posted here earlier.

I didn't think his body shape was very sfh-ish

and notice the white legs

thanks.
reason for unknown identity is having ordered chicks hatched to order - of 20 or so chicks, 4 were supposed to be sfh, but none are unless this is one. I did get some interesting breeds that I hadn't ordered, though (sulmtalers!).

I can sympathize on the awful smells- for the past few days it's been really hot & my duck pond water has gotten really nasty smelling. I do have good filtration system & this is the first time I've had a prob. I decided today to drain it, thinking it was mostly the heat (and build up of duck poop)? After getting it down quite a ways I could see something in the bottom in several places, got the net & went 'fishing'- BOY OH BOY 18 rotten duck eggs laying at the bottom! Now that was a nasty mess to clean up! Been wondering why I haven't gotten as many eggs as usual...

Oh my garwsh...my run of insanely crazy luck with these birds hasn't gone away. Dozens of that won't hatch, roosters that are completely bonkers, raccoons taking my best birds, but here is the best story yet... And NO, I do not make this stuff up (who would have time?!)
Um... WOW!! So weird... sorry your luck with this breed has been so... unusual!

I can sympathize on the smell... noticed it a few days ago, thought something in the woods died... but as time went along it got stronger and we were able to pinpoint what and where it was...

found the coon's 'stash' of snacks. and presumably from the coon we disposed of last week. either that or he forgot where he put them, but who could miss that stink? LOL

found the missing roosters and 2 of the hens. unfortunately they are out of reach to do anything with, unless we tear up 2 trees and several large raspberry clumps grown over by honeysuckle vine.

on the plus side, (I think?) a couple possums came in for the free meals and both are now disposed of too. thanks are due to my "part time LGD" LOL he caught one who 'played possum' and 'treed' the other on a tall stump.

I have border collie rescue. She was turned into a shelter in NC pregnant.

Mia returning another ball. Her acceleration to go fetch a ball is truly unbelievable!

I would love a BC or an Aussie Shepherd, but unfortunately my DH is not as enamored with those breeds as I am.

Sorry. Lala... this could be a SFH / Gamebird cross, but it does not look pure to me. Too leggy and lanky imo.

I'm loving those photos!

I probably missed it if you answered before... How do your BC's do with the chickens? I used to keep Shetland Sheepdogs myself and wondered if shelties or BC's could work with the birds.

I have a feeling my broody is going to abandon the rest of the eggs. We'll see.

I don't have an incubator so I can't put them in to continue brooding if any are still viable. Any ideas?

If any of your herding breeds... sheltie's, bc's, tervs, etc... have any herding instinct, then while they can be great for "working" the livestock, they are not good guardians.
I have all three... they have various herding titles... and I can tell you that if left alone with the livestock they would never quit working them.

Herding breeds and livestock guardian breeds (if they retain their respective natural instinct) are two totally different kinds of dogs.

Yes, that's what I've heard. And I never thought that a sheltie would be smart around the birds. I have heard folks using them, but doesn't seem like it would be good on a general bases.

My last shelties were from a working sire (he was a working herd dog). I never trained her for herding, but you could see the traits there.

My uncle had a BC -- incredible, incredible dog -- and many different poultry. They had to work very hard to teach the dog to leave the chickens alone and not herd them constantly....helped when they got sheep, lol. But he wasn't like an LGD, in that he wanted to live with the stock and protect them specifically. He did guard the whole place, but they did lose birds here and there to predators getting in the chicken barn and the dog ignoring them (but heaven help anything bothering the sheep, lol). It's actually kind of hard to bond any dog to chickens to begin with, and I can sure see how a herding dog would really have a bit of difficulty with that adjustment.

Leah's Mom....is there a TSC, feed store or something with poultry supplies nearby? Call and ask if they have an a incubator in stock. Just an LG or Farm Innovator, no fan, no turner, will run you about $45-50, and it might help you keep them alive. Or very quickly, google how to make a light bulb incubator and build one from parts sold at HD or a hareware store. The eggs will be OK for a bit if she does leave them, and being too hot is worse than getting too cold.

The car still smells this morning. Gross. Poor DH about puked his guts when he smelled it this morning.

sunny - I'm afraid that smell might be in there a long time. I had a mouse nest in a car once and it stunk forever BUT

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS STUFF: Anti Icky Poo Quart

Spray it and then keep straying it daily. It really does work. Use it all the time. One of the best investments I've made for cleaning up stuff. IT IS BACTERIA (and enzymes) that digest the decomposing body, urin, doo doo, blood, etc. and put out H2O. Really cleans things up and takes away the stench.

I first started with a quart to decide if I liked it. Then I ended up purchasing it by the GALLON to refil my quart bottle.

Can use in stinky shoes, sports helmets, etc. Anywhere there is animal/people body related smells. Can even use it in the chicken coop. I'm in process of trying an experiment in the litter in a small area to see how it works at starting break-down (like using the LABs). I don't have anything conclusive to report on that yet.
