Your feedstore won't carry SFH as no hatchery (Ideal, Meyer, etc) has them (yet...hopefully ever). But they should have sex linked breeds so you could get some day olds. Or poke around for breeders and get POL pullets (Welsummer, etc, might be possible).

It is much more difficult to sex a SFH young. I have two now at 4-6 weeks (I think, can't quite remember) I'm not sure of yet...sometimes, you aren't sure until they crow! But...if you make contacts now, maybe someone would be willing to save some pullets for when you are ready. If I lived closer, I'd hatch some and see what we get... Well, once my girls decide to really start popping eggs back out, lol.

Excited to finally post on here! I have had this girl for a few months now: And just recently got these three (2 roo's, 1 hen): Can't wait to start collecting eggs and hatching next spring!

I love the blue and black hens! (and wish I could cross them with my black roo!)

I'll sell sexed sfh, but they won't be babies...

the ones i'll be taking to Knoxville/Richmond will be between 7 and 12 weeks old or so (hatch September 16 and October 13) sexing is still best guess at this point but a couple are showing signs of being definite roos.

I should have clarified a little. Everyone that comes to buy from me in Maryland wants sexed day-old SFHs for $10 each. Once they are old enough to identify the sex (like you mentioned 7-12 weeks old), I am not going to sell them for $10 each. My SFHs eat like pigs (no offense to pigs) and by the time they are 12 weeks old, they probably have eaten over $20 of feed. So if you want older, sexed pullets, be prepared to pay more. Or just buy an autosexing breed.

Why can't you cross them with your black roo, is he not sfh?

Once I get my other hens and they grow a bit I would be interested in getting an older one that was a pretty good guess to be female.

Right now I am learning all I can about raising chickens before March when I get my chicks.

You missed it. I am just north of Dallas, TX.


Is adding one chicken to a young flock a bad idea? Is it better to add two or more at a time so the new birds don't get picked on so much?

ok just a heads up... I'm headed for 2 shows in the next month. the VPBA will be at the caroline county fairgrounds north of Richmond VA, and the TVPC show (also ABA nationals) in Knoxville tn...

I've got a variety of chicks I can bring with me, if someone is interested, but they will be staying here otherwise.
a few SFH (possibly a few of leigh's extras), 1 black laced bantam blrw cockerel, a pair of mille fleur bantam cochin chicks (the pullet is split mille but will produce nicely marked chicks). I've also got an ee cross pullet that should mature large bantam or small LF... momma is LF EE, sire is red bantam cochin. yeah he got lucky. LOL as well as a silver grey dorking girl or 2... (mature, going on 2 years old).

I will look to see you at VPBA. I will be showing a number of birds, ameraucanas and cream legbars. Looks like I may want sell my newest MF SFH cockerel and a white/red cockerel.

He is a SFH, but those aren't my girls, lol. Wish they were!




Where might I find more info about VPBA? It would be quite a drive, but maybe we could go...
