Zoolander

uh... ok. not having a tv, I miss some references, but I think I can live without knowing some references

Yeah, it was a movie. Never saw it actually but I know of "the zoolander" look. I don't think we missed much.

On a different note I started getting SFH pullet eggs last week. Wasn't sure which breed was leaving the presents until this weekend when I saw one of the SFH girls leaving the nesting box. Super excited!

and with a breed that is fairly uncommon, that is, IMO, the correct way to approach breeding these wonderful birds... I free range as much as possible, having given up on keeping them penned and unhappy and will just isolate different roos at different times during the year of my free range bunch, to assure purebred eggs from my sfh girls.
Free-ranging really has nothing to do with breeding them landrace. I have 12 different breeds including Alsteirer, American Bresse, Ayam Cemani, Birchen Marans, Barnevelder, Bielefelder, Cream Legbar, Hedemora, Isbar, Partridge Orpingtons, Sulmtalers, and Swedish Flower Hens. Some of them are raised towards a SOP. Some like the Hedemora and SFH are landrace. ALL of them free-range. Specifically for the SFH, I don't separate out SFH roosters from the SFH group. I want as much diversity in coloration as possible.

Edit: I don't out-cross any of the breeds, although I always wondered what a Cream Legbar and a Cemani cross would look like. Would it be an all-black bird that lays blue eggs called a Cembar?

Quote: I wasn't implying that it did... I'm not breeding them as a landrace, I selected which birds to keep and by that I'm making a decision which way I want to go with them. I was just commenting that they didn't like being penned, so I've turned them loose again.

BDM - How's that gorgeous girl that I want doing?

I'm thinking that's alma? her dark girl? I've got chicks from her in the brooder and more due to hatch on the 12th.

we're pretty sure Mace is Alma's primary roo. though I think one of the chicks is crested so Sorenson snuck in somewhere. LOL

Yes - the dark girl. How the heck am I going to get chicks? Shipped eggs just don't work w/a broody over here. Besides that, I like to see those little kiddos and choose the dark ones.

Maybe I need to break down and get an incubator... Let me know the percentage of the hatch that turn out dark.

if I think of it, i'll take some pics of them later tonight... they're all looking about the same right now.

I want some of these chickens!! :) I'm thinking I may have found my new favorite chicken breed. As soon as I can buy chickens again, I must get some of these lovelies.
